The Academy of Arts (Akademie der Künste) of Berlin has awarded the architect Francisco Mangado with the 2017 Art Prize, in the Architecture category. This award is an acknowledgment of his career as an architect, with masterpieces such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Asturias (2015), the Spanish Pavilion for the Zaragoza Expo (2008), the Álava Archaeological Museum (2009) and the Center Of Congresses of Palma de Mallorca (2016).
Francisco Mangado has been awarded with the Art Prize 2017, given by the Akademie der Künste (Berlin), in its Architecture category. The 2017 Großer Kunstpreis Berlin (Berlin Art Prize: Grand Prize) of this edition has been obtained by the Turkish filmmaker Emin Alper. In its Music category was awarded the Spanish compositor Elena Mendoza.

The Art Prize was created in 1948. Other five prizes have been awarded in the following categories, besides the Architecture Prize:

            - Visual Arts: Axel Anklam (Germany)
            - Music: Elena Mendoza (Spain)
            - Literature: Annet Gröschner (Germany)
            - Performing Arts: Valery Tscheplanowa (Russia)
            - Film and Multimedia Art: Athina Rachel Tsangari (Greece)

The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 18 at the Academy Building at the Pariser Platz in Berlin.
 
About Francisco Mangado

Mangado is professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra. He has also been a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architecture at the School of Architecture at Yale University, guest lecturer at the EPF Polytechnic School of Lausanne , Baird and Gensler guest lecturer at Cornell University and guest lecturer at the Polytechnic of Milan.
 
In June 2008, he founded the Arquitectura y Sociedad [Architecture and Society] Foundation, which works to favor the interaction of architecture with other creative, economic and rational disciplines, receiving the gold medal given by the CSCAE (Superior Council of Architects' Colleges of Spain) in 2015. In parallel to these activities he has worked as an architect from his practice in Pamplona.
 
He has received, among others, the Architecture Award Andrea Palladio, the Architectural Thiene, the Architécti Prize, the CEOE Award, the FAD, the Urbanism, Architecture and Public Works Prize awarded by the Madrid City Council, the "Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal" awarded by the UIA, the García Mercadal Prize, the Spanish Architecture Prize awarded by the  CSCAE, the London Copper Architecture Prize and the EU RIBA Prize Granted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
 
He has been appointed as RIBA International Fellowship, a distinction awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and AIA Honorary Fellowship, awarded by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
 
In July 2015 he was appointed Biennial General Coordinator and under his coordination, the Spanish Pavilion was awarded with the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in May 2016.
 
Notable among Mangado’s works are the Cultural Center and Church in Thiene (1996), the Congress Center and Auditorium of Pamplona (2003), the Place Pey Berland in Bordeaux (2004), the Municipal Exhibition and Congress Center of Ávila (2009), the Archaeology Museum of Vitoria (2009), the Football Stadium of Palencia (2006), the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza (2008), the Teulada Auditorium (2011), the Congress Center of Palma de Mallorca (2016), the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias in Oviedo (2015) and an office tower in Buenos Aires (2008).

Francisco Mangado, (Navarra, 1957), is an architect from the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra, where he has been a professor since 1982. He has been a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at the Yale University, visiting professor at the EPF Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Baird and Gensler guest professor at Cornell University and visiting professor at the Polytechnic of Milan.

From his works they emphasize the Palace of Congresses and Auditorium of Pamplona "Baluarte" (2003), the Field of Soccer of Palencia (2006), the Municipal Center of Exhibitions and Congresses of Ávila (2009), the Museum of Archeology of Vitoria (2009 ), the Spanish Pavilion for the Zaragoza International Exhibition (2008), the BBAA Museum of Asturias in Oviedo (2015) and the recently inaugurated Palau de Congresos de Palma de Mallorca (2016) and the New Venue Building of Norvento Enerxia in Lugo (2017). Currently he develops his activity in several countries.

Thanks to this professional work he has received, among others, the Andrea Palladio Architecture Award, the Architecture FAD, the CEOE prize, the Construmat Architecture Award, the Fernando García Mercadal Architecture Prize, the Asturian Architecture Prize, the "Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal" awarded by the International Union of Architects, the Copper in Architecture Award, the RIBA EU Award, the Spanish Architecture Award 2009 and the RIBA for International Excellence, among others.

In 2011 he was named "International Fellow" of the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and in 2013 honorary member of the AIA (American Institute of Architects). In November 2016, the Berlin Academy of Arts grants Francisco Mangado the Berlin Art Prize-Architecture Prize 2017 in recognition of his work.

In 2008 he founded the Architecture and Society Foundation, which works to favor the interaction of architecture with other disciplines of creation, thought and economy, which has received the CSCAE gold medal (Higher Council of Architects of Spain) 2015

In July 2015 he was appointed General Coordinator of Biennials and under his coordination was awarded to the Spanish Pavilion the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennial in May 2016.
