The Annex will be built adjacent to the historic main building designed by Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. The new premises will facilitate a new contemporary program of Fin- land’s National Museum. Building the Annex is essential for facilitating exhibitions that meet modern standards.
JKMM Architects' building, named Atlas, was designed with a large disk disc-shaped roof and will contain an additional exhibition space and a restaurant for the museum. It will also be a new public entrance for the National Museum of Finland and is designed to improve circulation within the institution.

"We wanted to create a building that will enhance visitors' experience by improving the way they are received and the overall circulation in the museum. "As in most of our projects, we wanted people to be able to find their way intuitively minimising the need for signage and to also discover and enjoy the nearly forgotten museum garden."
