ASA has a commitment to innovation, research and dissemination of knowledge about science and technology applied to architecture to optimize the ecological quality of urban and architectural projects. In 2018 he announces his annual contest for students and young architects ASAcción 2018: Rehabitando Barrios. Re-inhabiting Cities.
The purpose of this contest is to research on proposals for building intervention and its urban influence, in which sustainability strategies should be proposed in the area of the municipalities with EDUSI, whether it is financed or not, or the actions carried out in the Regeneration Areas and Urban Renovation, in accordance with the State Plan for the Promotion of Housing Rental, Building Rehabilitation, and Urban Regeneration and Renovation 2018-2021 or other rehabilitation areas defined by local administrations.

Awards EX AEQUO

The project aims to consolidate a methodology that integrates rehabilitation, legal mediation, and community support, to address the problems related to housing in all its magnitude. The methodology is based on three fundamental aspects: participation; the transversal and inclusive look; and empower citizens.

Punt Raval is one more piece in the social construction of the Raval neighborhood. On the basis of an opportune reading of the territory and to seek alliances with organizations of common objectives, attention is paid to the homes of vulnerable people from a transversal perspective that integrates community mediation, legal support and rehabilitation as an empowerment tool and integration, in order to take advantage of the transforming capacity of housing in all its magnitude.

The house is located in a ground floor building plus four floors. The bad state of conservation of this one can be seen from the point of access. In broad strokes we find an unhealthy building, with serious problems of humidity, focused on the party wall, and without accessibility. With an excess of users for the limited living space and serious hygiene problems.

In view of this emergency situation, an architectural improvement action is proposed that allows an immediate solution to the problem. A solution that as far as possible makes the place where you live habitable.

It consists of a remodeling of the Las Fuentes de Zaragoza neighborhood that generates a positive impact on the city, the neighborhood and different private enclaves.
The proposals have been made to comply with the EDUSI of Zaragoza attending mainly to a social, environmental, energy and urbanistic strategy.

The project in a real way the area of the garden to the city and the neighborhood. At the same time, it provides new facilities to the neighborhood: market, swimming pools and sports courts and green areas. It improves its connection by adding a new tram line and a train station on an existing line and its mobility with new cycle and pedestrian routes.

In addition, the implementation of the park gives modernity to the neighborhood and makes it a leader in a sustainable transformation with passive elements, such as street lamps for self-supply and the building of the chapel.

On the other hand, the biomass combined cycle plant leads the neighborhood to a circular economy with electricity and ACS for distribution in the neighborhood.

In a first estimation of approximate calculations, the total proposal avoids, compared to a conventional proposal and taking into account a conservative scenario, up to 5838 tons of CO2 per year and 50743 MWh of primary energy. Favoring to diminish the 74,8 Mt of CO2 that are emitted annually in Spain.

The proposal consists of the recovery of the wetland from surplus water that the treatment plant does not admit, being able to use the wetland itself as a natural filter for the purification of wastewater and thus solving a double problem. A large number of research studies and practical experiences support this alternative and environmentally friendly system, being able to purify the water to very acceptable levels for later use or dumping.

The wetland occupies approximately a quarter of the site, with the rest of the space being allocated to the construction of a public park with an area of urban gardens, thus providing a service to citizens, which gives this project a social function.

The water coming from the WWTP would be channeled to the site in question, flowing by gravimetry due to the difference in heights. There, a system of artificial wetlands of subsurface flow would exert natural sewage treatment thanks to the action of the aquatic vegetation and the microalgae existing in this type of ecosystem. Part of this purified water can be used to irrigate the park and the urban gardens and another part of it must be channeled through an outfall to be discharged directly into the sea.

Mentions

After analyzing all the proposals, the jury makes special mention of three proposals.

The project "must be a torrero" is considered interesting because of its fluidity in the reflection from the urban space to the solutions of rehabilitation of the houses, treating the importance and influence of all the scales.

Interesting active and dynamic proposals on the squares of the neighborhood and housing.

It is very interesting to reflect on the enormous heritage of the cities of the Spanish tourist coast and how to reconvert them into living spaces beyond their specific and necessary function of reformatting.

The proposal gives ideas for a new tourism or permanent residence for new inhabitants of Mediterranean cities and proposes very detailed functional changes and constructive improvements for the improvement and reduction of energy demand.

Reflect on new ways of living, in an existing dwelling allowing an evolutive autonomy of young people and the total reform of other dwellings that allow to live in community, with spaces of intimacy and shared spaces.

Treat with great respect the existing architecture, with new and brave interventions and extensions.

9 Finalist

And finally we present the nine finalists of the proposal.

The jury wants to highlight the interest of all the proposals for their detailed analysis of the problems of neighborhood, city and territory, from a new vision that incorporates sustainability. It is considered that there is a lack of further deepening in environmental sustainability, in which there is still a lot of work to be done, at the level of a new management of resources and waste, energy is contemplated in each of the projects, but very few are contemplated Water.

All the proposals develop in detail and with new approaches their study on the place in which to intervene, but there is a need for innovative and contemporary intervention proposals that revitalize and update the habitat, at an urban and building scale.
