On June 9 the exhibition My root is was opened, by our friends Boa Mistura collective in the gallery Ponce + Robles of Madrid, where we had the pleasure of attending as guests.
"My root is" shows a photographic serie taken during his fantastic intervention in El Romerillo, a complex neighborhood of Havana, as a result of the invitation to participate in the XII Havana Biennial 2015, within the Organic Museum Romerillo project. The artists used 25 characteristic points to capture each of the poem verses of "I don’t know", by the Cuban Samuel Feijóo. The exhibition can be visited in Ponce+Robles gallery until July 17th.

Description by Boa Mistura

THE ROOT

We feel that there is no other poem like “No sé” by Samuel Feijóo to express the powerful roots we found in Cuba.

Water, rock and sun define the place and its ownership.

Because of this, its is nice for us to make and intervention in a “community” scale. Connecting people with the use of 25 points, each one for every verse of the poem.
Pieces that are non understandable individually, but as a group. We form part of the whole.

We are very interested in the identity of the communities, so therefore,  we have selected a serie of supports/walls  which are very characteristic of “El Romerillo.” Walls constructed with the use of oil barrels, wood pieces, brick collages and an unending list of materials that they’ve told us they use to create this incredible and wonderful sceneries.

To respect part of these supports and overall their memory, we decided to work with a color frame that will not reach the wall’s limits. Inside this frame, the verse. Isolated, aside, giving a new meaning to the space where is found.

The work, seems and is to us, a very abstract and poetic intervention that has the ability to transform the public space of the whole neighborhood. Adding to it,  a new layer of identity.

Boa Mistura. The work of Boa Mistura is all about the love of graffiti, colour and life. This group of 5 Spanish artists is, as the name says, a good mixture. Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. Boa Mistura represents a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistrua want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.

Boa Mistura is a multidisciplinary group whose roots are in graffiti, formed at the end of 2001 in Madrid, Spain. The group works in various fields: from the latest trends in graffiti and street murals, to illustration, graphic design, studio painting and collaborations with interior designers and architects.

They have taken part in exhibitions in art galleries such as the Reina Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida in Madrid, and the DA2 Museum in Salamanca. They have collaborated with foundations such as ONCE (Spanish national organisation for the blind), Oxfam and Antonio Gala, and given lectures at universities such as Madrid, Seville and Alcalá de Henares.

Boa Mistura has completed projects for brands such as Google, Microsoft, Sony Music and Adidas and in 2010 a Latin Grammy nomination for best cover design. The term “Boa Mistura”, from the Portuguese for “good mixture”, refers to the diversity of style and perspectives of each member. Love for graffiti, colour and life. Distinct visions which complement each other, influence each other, and always combine to create something even better.
