July 2014 JDWA project De Passerel in Apeldoorn has been completed. De Passerel House, formed with two barns, includes twelve group homes for people with a mental disability. The project marks the informal route that crosses the whole neighbourhood and introduces in the garden a place for vegetable gardens used by the new residents.

Description of the project by JDWA – Johan De Wachter Architects

July 2014 JDWA project De Passerel in Apeldoorn has been completed. For care institution De Passerel we designed twenty new group homes for people with a mental disability. In September the residents will move in their new apartments and homes.

Southern Canal Area
The Southern Canal Area in Apeldoorn will be redeveloped into a vibrant district on the canal where a number of monumental buildings remain iconic for the area. Amidst some working-class houses we designed twelve apartments and eight homes for people with a mental disability, in a scaled up house near the canal.

House with two barns
De Passerel House includes twelve group homes for people with a mental disability. The smaller barns
around the vegetable garden are home to eight compact dwellings for the same target group.

The group homes line the street just like any other ordinary house. The brick facade and tile roof confirm this image. The garden side of the house is identical to the front yet mirrored and lifted, creating space for the transparent shared living room. Thus the hood, that points to the inner garden, obtains character and expression. The smaller barns have a one-sided orientation: direction garden. The garden facade is maximum transparent, with closed parts in wood. Each resident has a private piece of pavement, but the
playground and vegetable garden are their actual garden. The steel profiled shed roofs and back facades face the adjacent plots. Here the barns present themselves as outbuildings on the backyard of these properties.

The project marks the informal route that crosses the whole neighbourhood; the homes may become an exception. In the garden there is place for vegetable gardens used by the new residents. There is also space for informal interaction with the local residents and a playground for the smallest children of the area.

De Wachter, Johan Jacob Maria born 1976 (Belgium). Civil Engineer Architect; Catholic University Louvain (KU Leuven), Department of  Architecture & Urban planning (2000). Membership: Stichting Bureau Architecten-register (architect registry).

After his studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium, Johan De Wachter moved to Rotterdam. From 2000 to 2004, he was employed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture and worked on various urban development and architecture projects and competitions. In 2003, he founded the Fün Design Consultancy (Fündc) and was a partner until 2005. In 2005, he founded Johan De Wachter Architects (JDWA). Currently, he works on projects in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal and China. JDWA is a design practice for architecture and complex urban development in the existing city. Designing with and for people in the neighbourhoods is a very important aspect of our work. Generic concepts and standard typologies are never applied directly but change according to the project’s context. This approach results in an intense working process that demands a lot of communication and interaction between the client, future users and the design team. The real needs are often beyond written briefs and become apparent through discussions.

Woonwerk Architecten is an architectural firm founded by Johan De Wachter and Rik De Vooght based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Antwerp, Belgium. They specialize in complex projects in today's city, with a research-based approach. They work on projects that prioritize life in all its aspects: comfortable homes, sustainable buildings, attractive neighbourhoods, and a healthy living environment.

Their approach is always based on the local context, both spatially and socioculturally and economically. Through research, they approach innovative projects at different scales, exploring different possible solutions that adapt to each specific context.

Johan De Wachter is an architect and founding partner of Woonwerk Architecten - Rotterdam. He arrived in Rotterdam after studying at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) and worked from 2000 to 2004 at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA/Rem Koolhaas) on various urban planning and architectural projects and competitions. In 2003, he founded Fün Design Consultancy, where he remained a partner until 2005.

In 2005, he founded Johan De Wachter Architecten, and in 2011, he founded 2DVW Architecten in Antwerp with Rik De Vooght. In 2023, the agencies changed names. The collaboration was further consolidated with the creation of Woonwerk Architecten. With Woonwerk, Johan works on national and international projects.

He was selected for the "Europe 40 Under 40 Award" in 2014. This award recognized him as one of the 40 most outstanding young design talents in Europe.

Rik De Vooght is an architect and founding partner of Woonwerk Architecten - Antwerp. Rik studied at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he graduated as an architect and engineer. He began his career with an internship at Jo Crepain Architect N.V. and worked as a project manager, and later as a project manager, on various national and international projects.

Together with Allard Schwencke, Rik founded Open Architecten bvba, where he was project manager and responsible for several projects in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal.

Rik later changed the name of Open Architecten bvba to Rik de Vooght Architecten bvba. In the meantime, he also founded 2DVW Architecten bvba, together with Johan de Wachter (JDWA). 2DVW Architecten is an architecture and design studio specializing in large-scale projects, both national and international.

The "Pharmacy De Vooght" project was nominated for the Belgium Building Awards, the National Steel Building Prize, and won the 2007 Architecture Night. In 2010, the "Balteau Site" urban development plan in Liège won joint first place in the Europan 10 international design competition.
