In the new Belvédère district of Bordeaux, the architectural firm Studioninedots presents, at a time when work is increasingly detached from specific times and places, a building whose value lies in its innovative interaction spaces, which respond to the request of contemporary companies for new ways of working, encouraging flexibility, collaboration and diversity.

Intended to become the social heart and a collective and versatile space for working, relaxing and meeting, the project takes advantage of its privileged location on the corner of the central axis of the Joliot-Curie boulevard to create a ground floor that is as open and transparent as possible, giving rise to a space where work and leisure converge, resulting in a building that fosters social community within.

Using a grid structure, the project developed by Studioninedots creates visual cohesion using a prefabricated façade solution of sand-coloured pigmented concrete that reflects the spirit of local architecture, frames the spectacular views, supports loads by minimising the core and creates open floor plans that can be reconfigured to meet different needs.

Facette also features a vertical garden that connects nature with the various outdoor spaces and open staircases, offering spaces of comfort and efficient cooling, resulting in a building that aims to become the social heart, offering a serene refuge from the bustling boulevard and serving as a meeting place where workers, neighbours and users of the neighbouring building can connect.

Project description by Studioninedots

In the new urban district of Belvédère in Bordeaux, we're thrilled to unveil the finalised Facette. The design is Studioninedots' response to the request for a place that fosters new ways of working and offers the flexibility, collaboration and diversity essential for today's entrepreneurs. For at a time when work is increasingly untethered from specific times and places, the building's true value lies in its innovative spaces for interaction.

Facette boasts a sequence of distinctive collective spaces, leading users from the ground floor, along the facade to the roof terrace. These spaces drive the social community within the building. The building's communal ambition and enticing, multi-purpose spaces set Facette apart as a building that fits today's working needs.

The prime corner location on the central axis Boulevard Joliot-Curie was the driving force for us to create the most transparent ground floor possible, an open environment where workplace and public space converge. As a result, Facette appears to balance on a slender base, not only leaving as much space as possible for shared activity all around, yet even seeming to draw the publicspace in. Impressive concrete arches create a strong visual appeal, expressing the creative ambitions of the space. It’s set to become the social heart, a collective, versatile space for work, relaxation and meeting — or as we more often call it, the ‘WeSpace’.

Through expansive glass walls, the ground floor seamlessly extends into the adjacent pocket park, a collective, green area between the buildings that offers a serene retreat from the bustling boulevard. It serves as a gathering spot where Facette occupants and users of the neighbouring ARK building can connect.

A vertical garden rises from the park, with green outdoor spaces interconnected by open staircases. Extending across the entire width of the building, this facade offers effective cooling inBordeaux’s climate and pleasant spaces for interaction and relaxation. The vertical garden opensinto a collective top floor with green outdoor spaces and wide views of Bordeaux all around.

The green facades and roofs enhance the urban climate by keeping the air cooler and increasing humidity compared to traditional buildings. This design helps mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce particulate matter and air pollution, and address related health issues. Rainwater is collected on the green roofs and drained through the pocket park.

Flexibility was crucial to ensure the building could adapt to future functions. We opted for a load bearing, prefabricated facade and repositioned one of the two required staircases to the outside, which allowed us to minimise the core. This approach enabled us to create entirely open floor plans that can be easily reconfigured to meet evolving needs.

A grid structure organises the facades and creates visual cohesion. The window openings expandas they rise, framing the spectacular views. The facades are made with sand-coloured pigmented concrete, echoing the spirit of Bordeaux's historic stone architecture.

Studioninedots was established in 2011 by Albert Herder, Vincent van der Klei, Arie van der Neut and Metin van Zijl as an architecture and urban design practice whose work extends from housing to urban concepts. Their practice excels in projects that transform complex urban sites, interweaving the built environment with the social fabric of a city. They are fascinated by the processes of (re)using or activating these sites; their dynamic contexts often demand unconventional solutions yet inspire new collective ways of living.

When facing urban challenges, they identify opportunities in circularity and, at the same time, embrace beauty and tactility as essential human needs. They team up: they adopt a collaborative approach that inspires, challenges and strengthens our work. Together with their clients and partners, they translate forward-thinking ideas and designs into a realistic framework, creating characteristic spaces that function as catalysts for meeting, exchange and connection.

Studioninedots is a multidisciplinary design practice with professionals working across architecture, interiors and urban planning. Studioninedots is based in Amsterdam, a city that inspires their with its open-mindedness, adaptability and creativity. With this in mind they initiated the Creative Workspace 1-1-1 in the former Stork factory building located along the Gedempt Hamerkanaal in Amsterdam’s north. It has an unfinished quality like its surroundings, thrives in its temporality, balances between rawness and comfort and has an element of unpredictability in its use: Studioninedots own WeSpace.
