Yener Torun is a 32 year-old architect and over the past year has been seeking out and photographing buildings around Istanbul, but not any building. With his camera, his photographs have transformed Istanbul, into the geographical equivalent of Aladdin’s cave of wonders.

“Think of the Istanbul images you have seen before; most are taken in historical places or around the Bosphorus, and I like them too, but what I want to find and show is completely different. Even long-term residents of Istanbul can’t believe that my pictures are of the city they live in.”

The photographs show us another hidden reality among the beautiful Ottoman and Byzantine architecture and the blue Bosphorus, a wealth of impossibly bright buildings dominated by geometric patterns, rainbow hues and great architectural idiosyncrasies. ‘Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of buildings like these in Turkey,’ says Yener Torum. ‘So I spend most of my spare time finding them – it’s like a treasure hunt.’ Through his Instagram account, Yener posts his pictures and has been slowly but steadily documenting it all. He has attracted more than 36,000 followers.
