FIGMENT is the summer-long art and design festival on Governors Island, New York. This time has selected, not one, but two pavilions to be built for its 2015 summer "City of Dreams" program. The two designs are well underway, but they need your help to make it across the finish line. They are both seeking funding for construction, so if you have an interest in New York City's cultural programming, check out their Kickstarter campaigns and chip in to show your support!

- Billion Oyster Pavilion by New York-based BanG studio is a combination of the City of Dreams brief and the work of The New York Harbor School’s Billion Oyster Project. "El Billion Oyster Pavilion está construido enteramente con materiales utilizados por el Billion Oyster Project, y al final de esta temporada serán reutilizados directamente en Governor’s Island por la Harbor School." Oysters thrived in New York harbor until the water became too polluted to support them around the turn of the 20th century. Today, the water is finally healthy enough to reintroduce oysters. After its life on Governor's Island, the Billion Oyster Pavilion and its cast-concrete elements supports, or “Reef Balls,” will become homes for oysters. Its woven canopy will become “Oyster Condos,” or metal cages filled with old oyster shells. Both will be covered in oyster spat and placed in the harbor.
- Organic Growth by Izaskun Chinchilla Architects of Madrid is inspired by nature.- "Our pavilion states the ‘city of dreams’, the ‘city of tomorrow’ will have learnt further lessons from nature." Its flower-like canopies are made of reused and donated bike wheels, car rims, tripods, and umbrellas. These smaller elements will be given new life after the pavilion. Umbrellas and tripods will become shading devices, while larger elements might be used for chandeliers.
Billion Oyster Pavilion needs to raise $22,000, 10 days to go and Organic Growth is looking to raise $20,000, 27 days to go. Kickstarter has become a new way of realizing projects that otherwise would not be able to get funding.

Babak Bryan y Henry Grosman BanG studio
BanG studio is the collaboration between Babak Bryan and Henry Grosman. Central to our practice is the belief that our work is the resultant artifact of processes set in motion by us, as designers. While that artifact may exhibit great complexity, we believe that the only productive and interesting complexity arises through the layering of simple, well-understood processes that are controlled with precision.
For us, the ultimate power of design is its ability to effect change in the world. Much of our work layers many simple processes to create complex constructs that generate sensation, mood, feeling, and atmosphere. We produce spaces and objects that make visitors stop, take notice of the world around them, and see it in a new way. We believe the power to provide novel types of experience and meaningful social interaction is the most potent element that defines us as practitioners.
Our practice embraces recent technological advances in computing, because they are instrumental in articulating geometrical, mathematical, formal, and data driven processes. We also engage the notions of discipline and craft which can be better- equipped to deal with other kinds of physical, material, and social relationships, that are important in our work. A significant component of our practice involves the non-standard use of typical materials and an engagement with new material and construction techniques. Our use of contemporary digital fabrication techniques stems from their power to combine digital/ computational processes with physical/material realities in ways which generate new and complex relationships. The constant oscillation between physical and digital has become standard operating procedure in our practice.
Izaskun Chinchilla
Izaskun Chinchilla. Graduated Architect since 2001 from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). She is driving her own office since 2001 in Madrid. She has a long experience in education. She is Senior Teaching Fellow and Researcher in Barlett School of Architecture (UCL London, UK). She has also teached in Ecole Special (Paris, France) and in HEAD University (Geneva, Switzerland) and was Studio Professor in the University of Alicante (Escuela de Arquitectura Universidad de Alicante) from 2002 to 2007. At the moment, she teaches in Madrid University (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain) and in Instituto de Empresa (Madrid, Spain). Her designer activity is acompanied by a research project called “Social and Aesthetic Repercussions of technical topics and solutions which take ecology into account” and that has taken her as visitting scholar to Columbia University in New York (2002), Ecole de Mines de Paris (2003) and Princeton University in New Jersey (2004) and also to the Institut d´Arquitectura Avancada de Catalunya (Barcelona), in a Postgraduate Master (2003-2007).
