At age 103, the architect José Luis Romany Aranda died on May 9 (Dénia, January 26, 1921 - May 9, 2024). He was part of the group known as the "architectural avant-garde of autarchy", which included Sáenz de Oiza and Luis Cubillo.

After finishing his architecture studies at ETSAM in 1951, he began working in the General Directorate of Architecture, and from 1952 he began his relations with the Hogar del Empleado association where he introduced Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, who had graduated before.
Both began collaboration and formed a team with Luis Cubillo de Arteaga, Adam Milczynski and Manuel Sierra, constituting what is known today as the group of "the architectural avant-garde of autarky." They created complexes such as the Erillas Neighborhood Unit, the Batán neighbourhood (next to the Batán Station), Puerta del Ángel (Madrid) or the 600-home project next to the Manzanares River in 1952.

Romany was the author of the managed town of Fuencarral, with 2,039 homes in buildings of various types and other residential developments in the Juan XXIII and Loyola neighbourhoods in collaboration with Carlos Ferrán and Eduardo Mangada, 760 homes in Orcasitas with Alfonso Valdés Ruiz de Assin and others, two superblocks in Palomeras Sureste or the culture house in Tres Cantos in the nineties.

Among the awards won by Romany, the 1954 National Architecture Prize for the Chapel of the Camino de Santiago stands out, with a jury made up of Luis Moya Blanco, Modesto López Otero and José Luis Fernández del Amo, carried out in collaboration with Sáenz de Oiza and Jorge de Oteiza, or the first prize in the 1956 experimental housing competition, a neighbourhood currently known as Colonia Puerta Bonita, located in the Madrid neighbourhood of Puerta Bonita in the Carabanchel district.
