Maintaining the site's identity, the architecture practice D-A - Domitianus Arquitetura has renovated Ramalde Sports Park, located in the heart of the Ramalde Residential Complex, northwest of Porto, Portugal.

The original complex was designed between 1952 and 1960 by architect Fernando Távora and later modified by FNAT (Fundação Nacional para a Alegria no Trabalho - National Foundation for Joy at Work), with the addition of a football stadium and tennis courts. The recent renovation gives the park a pavilion-like architectural expression that allows it to blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

The renovated Ramalde Sports Park by D-A - Domitianus Arquitetura features an elegant, minimalist structure, simple yet formally integrated with its environment, thanks to its small scale. Programmatically, the complex comprises a new rugby and football field, an archery range, athletics tracks, and a building with five changing rooms, a multi-purpose room, administrative offices, a medical room, and restrooms.

The complex was built with exposed concrete, and for the cantilevered gable roof above the grandstand, a reinforced concrete load-bearing structure was chosen, consisting of a continuous prestressed beam supported by pillars spaced approximately fifteen meters apart.

Project description by D-A - Domitianus Arquitetura

The intervention is located in the northern half of the Ramalde Sports Park, comprising the construction of a new field for rugby and football, a support building with locker rooms and a covered stand, an athletics area (for shot put, hammer throw, and javelin), and a space dedicated to archery.

The Ramalde Sports Park is situated in the heart of the Ramalde Residential Unit and occupies an area of 5 hectares. It was initially designed between 1952 and 1960 by the architect Fernando Távora, within the framework of the Ramalde Residential Unit project, promoted by the Federation of Social Security Funds. The original project was later modified by FNAT (Fundação Nacional para a Alegria no Trabalho), which outlined an ambitious plan for the construction of several sports facilities, of which only the football stadium and tennis courts were built. The areas to the north and south of this central core remained undeveloped.

The placement of the new playing field constitutes the structural element of the intervention, due to its size and functional requirements. The remaining program areas were organized around this central field.

The new support building is directly related to the topographical intervention carried out for the installation of the playing field. Its volume is progressively revealed towards the southern end, where the main entrance is located, associated with a bar that opens onto a covered entrance porch. A large platform above the building provides access to the covered stand, positioned tangentially to the playing field.

Inside the building, several functional areas were incorporated, including five locker rooms, a multipurpose hall, administrative offices, a medical post, and sanitary facilities. The interior spaces are organized around a central atrium, resulting from the geometric articulation of the overall design.

The supporting structure of the stand’s roof is built in reinforced concrete, composed of a continuous prestressed beam supported by pillars spaced approximately fifteen meters apart. The cantilevered roof, composed of two slopes, gives the complex a pavilion-like architectural expression, in close harmony with the natural surroundings and existing trees, helping to mitigate the discontinuities that time has consolidated on the site.

D-A Studio [Domitianus- Architecture, lda] is an architecture firm, founded in 2004, in Lisbon, led by Paulo Tormenta Pinto and Rosa Maria Bastos. With more than a decade and a half of existence, D-A Studio operates contractually with public and private entities, developing projects in architecture, conservation and restoration, urbanism, and public space. This site presents a selection of projects and buildings, which in its set contributed to clarifying the conceptual line followed by D-A Studio. Projects of various scales explore multiple programmatic itineraries, based on detailed solutions, where the quality of space results from the articulation between architectural culture and the spirit of each place.

D-A Studio considers the influence of the architectural debate promoted in Portugal during the last quarter of the 20th century, as a starting point for the work it carries out. D-A Studio seeks to affirm a humanist, and integrative discourse, in close articulation with the territory and the environment. At D-A Studio each project is explored in a rigorous way, considering that the quality of architecture is consummated by the relationship with time.
