To mark International Women's Day, METALOCUS presents a selection of ten architecture studios, both national and international, founded and led by women, thus highlighting their work and successful careers. This year marks our thirteenth consecutive edition, featuring a total of 130 female architects.

Every March since 2015, METALOCUS has celebrated the contributions of female architects.

To continue the series we created over ten years ago, and convinced of the need to break glass ceilings and continue highlighting the efforts of female architects and their diverse career paths, we have once again brought together 10 professionals with extraordinary potential.

In this edition, the 13th, we pay tribute to the work and talent of ten architectural studios led by women whose projects, although always relevant, are not always sufficiently known.

These are the studios and architects selected this year.- Barbara Buser. Natalia Matesanz - Cumulolimbo Studio. Huang Wenjing - OPEN Architecture. Marta Benedicto, Ivet Gasol, Carlota de Gispert, Anna Llonch, Lucia Millet and Clara Vidal - Cierto Estudio.  Patcharada Inplang - Sher Maker. Ana Paula de Alba - APDA. Clàudia Raurell. Carmen Maurice. Rocío Pina - ENORME Studio. Ana Vida - Vida Architecture.

More information

Barbara Buser (Zúrich, 29 de abril de 1938) is a Swiss architect trained at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich). She began her professional career in the 1960s, during the height of the European economic recovery, and spent ten years working in Africa, an experience that broadened her perspective on architecture in diverse contexts. Her work quickly began to reflect a critical view of the indiscriminate consumption of materials and the environmental impact of the sector, anticipating debates that are central today.

She has developed a pioneering career focused on sustainability, the reuse of materials, and the social responsibility of architecture, demonstrating a material ethic based on reducing resource use and extending the lifespan of buildings.

In 1989, she co-founded Bauteilbörse Basel, a marketplace for reclaimed building components from demolition sites. In 1996, together with Klara Kläusler, she founded the first "component exchange" in Basel, facilitating the reuse of materials and components. This pioneering initiative in Switzerland fostered a culture of reuse that challenges the linear model of produce-use-demolish and promotes a circular logic, where each element retains value beyond its first use—an action now known as "urban mining."

In 1998, together with Eric Honegger, she founded baubüro in situ AG, and in 2022, Wegwarte AG, solidifying her commitment to sustainable architecture. Her dedication to reuse has made her a leading figure in international architecture, inspiring new generations of professionals toward more responsible and virtuous models.

Her commitment to low-impact architecture was exemplified in the office building and cultural center for the Umwelt Arena in Spreitenbach, developed in collaboration with Zirkular GmbH. Conceived as a built manifesto, the project incorporates a high proportion of reused materials—structures, joinery, and installations—demonstrating the compatibility between architectural quality, resource efficiency, and material traceability.

Currently, Barbara Buser is responsible, as the future tenant, for the sustainable development of the Franck Areal, a project that reflects her vision of adaptable, demountable architecture designed for future deconstruction. Recognized with numerous awards in the field of sustainability, she is now a key figure in the European debate on the circular economy and architecture.

Carmen Maurice Architecture (CMA) is an architectural practice founded by Carmen Maurice Haëntjens in 2020 based in Vannes, France, working primarily in the west of France.

The team, currently consisting of four people, works on a wide range of programmes and project scales, both in renovations and new construction. The agency's clients include local authorities, individuals, companies and property developers.

Carmen Maurice, an architect from ENSA Paris VDS (2018), sees her work in three stages:

Thinking. Informed by her research, reading and travels, she designs sensitive architecture that resonates with the landscape. She pays particular attention to traditional know-how, convinced that this exploration can give rise to a more reasoned architecture.

Building. She experiments with materials in the studio and draws on her experience of building sites to enrich her design concepts. Using geometry, mass and light, she constructs purposeful architecture, making each project a meaningful apparition.

Remain. Her work is part of a global quest in which each project aims to be a constant reference point in space and time, embodying shared values capable of bringing us together, adapting to our surroundings and inspiring us.

ENORME Studio, founded in Madrid in 2016, is the evolution of three co-founders of PKMN Architectures: Carmelo Rodríguez, Rocío Pina and David Pérez. After collaborating for ten years on more than a hundred projects, they have launched this new shared initiative that maintains the same radical approach to architecture. They design and build architectural projects based on industrial systems and typological innovation.

They specialize in the design of mobile systems applied to housing, workspace, and commerce. They have transformed the traditional concept of living into architecture, creating spaces that are easily transformed through simple gestures. They design and implement participatory dynamics in the field of city construction through their creative services platform CIUDAD CREA CIUDAD and the creation of CITIZEN BRAND IDENTITIES. Their goal is to promote alternative ways of addressing urban issues and motivate the creation of a proactive civic culture. They design and apply "Tactical Urbanism" tools that translate teamwork strategies and collective thinking dynamics into the design and management of public and private spaces. Their goal is to return the city to its citizens as an emotional, plural, and relational space.

Among their most notable projects is their collaboration on the Spanish Pavilion for Expo 2025 Osaka, alongside Néstor Montenegro and Smart and Green Design. Selected through a public competition organized by Acción Cultural Española, their proposal, under the motto "The Kuroshio Current," seeks to connect Spain and Japan through a comprehensive experience that combines architecture, art, design, gastronomy, and outreach, using sustainable and low-impact materials.

Other recent projects include the flexible Beyome home in Madrid, a modular system that allows rooms to be reconfigured according to the needs of the inhabitants, and the installation The Theory of Cherries, a playful and colorful proposal that encourages interaction and reflection on public spaces.

ENORME Studio has been recognized for its innovation and commitment to sustainability, participating in various competitions and receiving mentions in specialized publications. Its interdisciplinary and participatory approach continues to position it as a benchmark in contemporary Spanish architecture.
