The international architecture festival Open House Madrid will be held on the weekend of September 24-26, 2021. Visitors to the festival will be able to learn about some of the most emblematic works of the prolific architect Luis Gutiérrez Soto, nicknamed the "Pichichi," one of the essential figures of modern architecture in our country.

The 7th edition of Open House Madrid will pay tribute to Gutiérrez Soto (June 6, 1900 - February 4, 1977, Madrid), promoter of the modern movement in our country, and an inexhaustible creator of the image of Madrid. That is why Open House Madrid has created a participatory map that reflects the footprint that the architect has left in the capital.
Luis Gutiérrez Soto was one of the architects with the largest number of works in 20th century Europe, among which is the famous Callao Cinema in Madrid. Creator and revolutionary of domestic architecture, he contributed some of the most used formal characteristics in all of Spain.

Gutiérrez Soto, one of the most prolific architects of the 20th century inside and outside Spain, outlined much of the contemporary architecture of the capital, building nearly 400 projects. It is difficult to walk through Madrid without encountering some of its most emblematic buildings, among which they stand out.-

His work was diverse and versatile. He knew how to skillfully play with various styles and adapt to the times, achieving brilliant results without neglecting his objective: a functional architecture and for the client's taste. He was not a manifest architect, nor an architectural philosopher or an artist, but a man of the trade, creator of the most unexpected buildings in Madrid, and a revolutionary in residential architecture.

The decade of the 30s was one of the most creative for him, he designed cafes, homes, and sports and social facilities, among which is the emblematic Chicote Bar on Gran Vía, surviving among many others that did disappear such as the Primitive Airport of Barajas or the La Isla Pools, both from 1931.

In his maturity he designed some of his most significant works, the Torre del Retiro (1971) in Menéndez Pelayo and the Edificio de La Unión y el Fénix (1966-71) in Paseo de la Castellana, two towers with evident contemporary aesthetic.

If something defines Luis Gutiérrez Soto, it is versatility, the ability to provide excellent architectural solutions, and a laudable mastery of styles. He was a pure talent of architecture and an inexhaustible creator of the image of Madrid.
