Bethanien, Deaconry building, designed by the E2A architecture studio, is located in the Swiss city of Zurich, currently a global banking and financial center, it is a city that maintains strong references to the lake.

Bethanien, Deaconry is a building with a complex set of interrelated functions, with different types of synergies, which arise from the need to coordinate the different lodging, nursing and assistance programs.

The orthogonal shape of the plant plays with the typologies present in the surrounding urban fabric, an old factory area south of the city's great bay of railroad tracks, which is currently in a process of transformation towards residential uses and facilities .
The program established by the E2A architecture studio includes a palliative care center, a nursery, a specialized medical center, classrooms, service areas and a hotel with a conference room, bar and restaurant. The complex has an efficient infrastructure core that helps in many functions.

In response to the vertical sequence of functions, a robust structure with a high level of flexibility was created. The facade receives a consistent treatment on each side with repeating patterns of external sliding glass windows.
 

Project description by E2A

The plane-like building volume can be interpreted as a solitary gesture. The orthogonal form of the plane plays off of the typologies present in the surrounding urban fabric, which is characterized by manufacturing plants. The diagonal relationships resulting from this strategy create the basis for the structure of the exterior spaces.

The deaconry consists of a complex set of interrelated functions; this arose out of necessity in the coordination of the intended nursing and assistance programs, particularly in regard to the extensive infrastructure required to create the most possible synergies.

As such, the program includes a palliative care facility, daycare, specialized medical facility, classrooms, service areas, and a hotel with a conference room, bar, and restaurant. A complex and efficient infrastructural core services these various functions.

Some are finished with self-contained vertical circulation, allowing parallel and simultaneous operations to occur without causing conflicts of interest between these separate functions.

The interplay of the programmatic elements results in a ground floor highly connected to the adjacent open space. The functions themselves create a public destination animated by the activity of the site, thus giving the space an urban quality.

The slight widening of the volume’s cubic form benefits the organization of the floor plans. With a linear core zone and load-bearing exterior walls, a column-free plan was developed and can be arranged in many configurations.

In response to the vertical sequence of the functions, a robust structure with a high level of flexibility was created. The façade receives consistent treatment on each side with repetitive patterns of external sliding glass windows.

Similarly to the structure of the floors, each of the various programmatic elements will manifest themselves through the use of the openings, generating an intriguing building skin.

Individually adjustable sliding shutters on the façade create a playful variability, allowing the grid of the windows to temporarily disappear and hinting at the simultaneous existence of multiple functions.

E2A Piet Eckert und Wim Eckert / Architekten, is an architecture firm founded by Wim Eckert and Piet Eckert in 2001.

Wim Eckert was born in 1969 in Zurich. Following his studies at the ETH Zurich (Diploma 1995, with honorable mention) he collaborated at OMA Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam from 1996 to 1997. He has been working as an independent architect since 1997 and founded E2A with Piet Eckert in 2001. Wim Eckert regularly gives lectures and workshops at universities and institutions.
 
From 2009 to 2011, Wim Eckert was a visiting Professor for Architecture and Sustainable Building (Bachelors and Masters Degrees) at the HCU HafenCity University Hamburg. Along with the teaching of architecture, the focal point of the visiting professorship was in developing a think tank which allowed for research about sustainability in relation to architecture, urban planning, the arts and engineering.

Since 2014, Wim Eckert is Guest Professor at the USI - Università dell Svizzera Italiana at Mendrisio.

Piet Eckert was born in 1968 in Mumbai (Bombay). Following his studies at the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture in New York and the ETH Zurich (Diploma 1994 at the ETH Zurich, with honourable mention) he collaborated at OMA Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam from 1995 to 1997. He has been working as an independent architect since 1997 and founded E2A with Wim Eckert in 2001.
 
Piet Eckert regularly gives lectures and workshops at various Universities and Institutes. He was a visiting professor at the Delft University of Technology and faculty member at the ETH Zurich. From 2009 to 2011, Piet was a visiting Professor for Architecture and Sustainable Building (Bachelors and Masters Degrees) at the HCU HafenCity University of Hamburg.
