The residential renovation and refurbishment designed by Atelier 111 architekti in Trhové Sviny, a town in the district of České Budějovice in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, was approached as an exercise where the reconstructed house results in an alternative to the suburban villas that are sometimes disproportionately cut out of the landscape.
The location of the house appealed to the architects from the outset, as the well-preserved city center is protected as an urban monument area due to its distinctive character, atmosphere, and strong potential.

In an area of small dimensions, Atelier 111 architekti has organized an extensive building program that includes a spacious living room with an outdoor terrace, attic with bedrooms and a games room, garden with fruit trees, two parking spaces, and a large workshop with a car elevator.
The housing project has been executed under an interesting premise, connecting two neighboring houses. One of them was the object of major reconstruction, and the other was in a state of disrepair. The basic form, scale, and materiality of the original masses are respected, and the internal layout is adjusted to make the building accessible from both sides.

Description of project by Atelier 111 architekti
Our new home was created in a historical part of a small South Bohemian town, which, although neglected, possesses a rather strong atmosphere and potential. The place attracted us from the beginning for its distinctive character and great location.
In the narrow sleepy streets, next to the grassy patch of the Kozina Square, we are hidden from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding traffic, while only a few steps separate us from the town center with shops, services and offices, schools, cinema, theater and railway station.
We perceive the reconstructed house as an alternative to suburban villas which sometimes disproportionately cut out of our landscape. On a significantly smaller area, we are implementing a building program which includes a sufficiently large living room with an adjoining outdoor terrace, an attic with children's rooms and a playroom, a bedroom with its own bathroom, a garden with fruit trees, two garage spaces and a large workshop with a car lift.
The residential building is created by connecting two neighboring houses. One of them underwent a significant reconstruction at the turn of the millennium, the other one is in a state of disrepair. We are getting rid of the unsuitable modern elements, such as a large dormer with a balcony and plastic windows.
Behind brick backing we discover original stone masonry and small historical fragments which hold value for us. We respect the basic shape, scale and materiality of the original masses. We adjust the internal disposition in an effort to make the building accessible from two sides – for pedestrians from the square and for cars from the opposite side.
The large window in the gable of the courtyard facade is an answer to the unique view of the church tower. Views from the interior of the courtyards enrich the overall perception of the space. We intentionally leave the newly created openings minimalistic to create a contrast with the original traditionally divided windows.

Atelier 111 architekti. Their first collaboration as Atelier 111 dates back to their studies at Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. Their first success, a special prize in an open architectural competition for treatment of urban space in the city of Tábor in 2002, gave them passion and motivation for further projects. In following years their studio began to expand. Through cooperation with experienced colleagues, they enriched our professional skills. Aside from architectural design of residential, public and industrial buildings, they have been focused on projects of biogas plants since 2006.
In 2010 they founded the Johann Hochreiter company which soon became one of the most important suppliers of biogas plants in the Czech republic. They were greatly enriched from our experiences gained during construction management of technologically complex power plants, as well as in the implementation of their other projects. They offer our services in the field of project design and related administrative activities, assistance in tender for contractors, cooperation and supervision in implementation of construction
