The architects of Ramos Alderete and Vicens + Ramos have worked together to transform a sports center, which will continue to be used, into a multipurpose space that is elegant and exclusive for a wide variety of events.

This space mutation project, which is scheduled to occur about six or seven times a year, has been a finalist in the FAD AWARDS 2019, in the Ephemeral Intervention category, and nominated in the German Design Awards 2020.
The challenge that Ramos Alderete and Vicens + Ramos faced was also to maintain existing lighting that could be cold, aggressive, and even of poor quality, and to respect the air conditioning supply and extraction areas.

The cloud, in particular, is a large black velvet fabric that surrounds the entire sports hall, which helps to abstract space. The curtain makes a drawing that is labyrinthine that, together with the quality of the fabric, makes everything look like an enigmatic and mysterious sky.

Description of project by Ramos Alderete and Vicens + Ramos

THE COMMISSION

Transform a sports hall in use into a large, elegant, and exclusive multipurpose space for receptions, presentations, awards ceremonies, banquets, events ... The mutation is expected to occur about six or seven times a year. Outside of these events, the sports hall will continue to be used as such, so the scenography must be quick and easy to assemble and disassemble, store, and reusable. In addition, it was necessary to maintain the existing lighting (cold, aggressive, and of poor quality) and respect the air conditioning air supply and extraction ports, which fell vertically from the ceiling in exposed ducts. It was also necessary to respect the folding baskets and the court separating curtains. All this trying to change the image of the interior of the sports center to turn it into a beautiful space with character while maintaining its versatility and capacity.

THE CLOUD

A deep black velvet curtain with a great tactile quality envelops the sports hall, abstracting the space. The absence of edges and black ground makes everything float in a dark universe. A substructure of curved rails hangs from the roof trusses, which are the support of some light, translucent white fabric 2.5m high curtains anchored with velcro to the guides. The labyrinthine pattern and the quality of the fabric build a magical sky of mysterious glazes that hides the ceiling installations without obstructing the air vents and acting as a screen for the existing spotlights and luminaires. The curved curtains avoid obstacles, envelop and shade lights, channel air and give character to the large multifunctional space of Pastrana.

All pre-existing elements are respected. The rail substructure is fixed to the trusses. The curtain is collected in a corner of the sports hall and the fabrics are hung and lowered with a lifting scissor. The assembly and disassembly of the scenery can be done in half a day.
