In this year's edition of Casa Decor, Mayice Studio, directed by Marta Alonso and Inmanol Calderón, has created a versatile and domotic “Hall of Mirrors”, sponsored by Niessen, taking into account the design, innovation and environmental impact of the products.

They explain their ideas below:
What is the essence of Mayice studio? What do you want to transmit from your creations?

We work with abstract concepts, which take aesthetic forms keeping the soul of the materials. We try to follow a minimalist line, which has a connection with the emotional part. Our creation and development processes are the same both in spaces and in objects. We try to get them excited. We believe in innovation and research. During the conceptualization and experimentation phase with shapes and materials we do not know what the final piece will be, and this makes it more exciting. We listen to the needs of people, brands and organizations to turn it into opportunities.

What is the most complicated thing when creating a space for a specific exhibition?

The most difficult thing is the blank page, the beginning. Analyze the needs of that space, the objective of that exhibition, conceptualize an idea, and remain faithful to that concept, without losing the essence in the entire process of building it. Generally the first idea is the freshest and we try not to get out of it, that is improving it and many times it is not easy to follow that path. The process of building with the materials, lights, shapes a concept is a process of tension. Also, the connection with the person, brand or organization that has applied for this job is very important, feeling and understanding are important. When the customer is ourselves, it is often even more difficult.

How did the inspiration idea for the 2020 Casa Decor space?

After listening to the brand commitment to sustainable digitization, we began to think about creating a space that is easy to control from the touch screen. Just as we use the smartphones that are the control table for many day-to-day decisions, it occurred to us to create a large table in the middle of the space, as if it were the control center. In this case, light and emotions are controlled. In the same way that from our smarphone we control many things in a simple way, homes can be controlled to reduce expenses. Control of light, comfort, humidity...

Through design, what can the Casa Decor visitor find in this space?

The visitor will find transparent and colored glass shapes where the refraction of light will generate shapes and colors that will invade the space. We want the visitor to be involved by playing with these crystal effects through brand technology.

A space to remember and experience where you want to stay. We hope it transmits peace.

Less is more?

Always.

We try to respect the materials and take them to their essence, giving them a new perspective.

Reaching the essence of objects or spaces is very complicated, and is available to few like Mies Van der Rohe or Dieter Rams whom we admire.

What role has the brand's design and minimalism played in creating the space?

Design and minimalism have been key in design, although in our studio, minimalism and design are the essence of what we try to do every day, both when designing objects and spaces. It is our hallmark that is why we are comfortable with the philosophy of the brand.

In this case, the original space is respected and preserved, a protected historic bourgeois style palace, with high ceilings and northern light. A space that makes us travel to the s. XX.

Through design we create glass pieces where light bathes the space generating effects on walls and ceilings, where the user controls them with technology.

We always like to combine technology and crafts, it is our hallmark.

How to combine design and comfort?

The design must be comfortable, although this is not always the case, especially if you are in an art-design environment.

To combine design and comfort, the product or space must be honest and that it solves the basic needs for what it will be used for. In other words, less is more.

How is the growing and necessary trend towards sustainability influencing the projects you carry out?

We believe that from now and in the future, spaces or objects must be sustainable. This does not mean that they necessarily come from a recycling chain. It is more sustainable to have a lamp that lasts a lifetime, than to be buying one every year one, the same thing happens with clothes or in life in general, it is a lifestyle.

When it comes to recycling plastics, the most sustainable thing is not to use them.

Constantly generating waste is not sustainable, that's why when we generate a space we try to modify it as little as possible, respecting its essence or when we generate an object we think it will last a lifetime.

Where are you looking at the design and architecture of the future?

Design and architecture look towards sustainability. We believe that objects and spaces must be durable and of good quality.

Although at the beginning it is a higher investment, in the end it is cheaper for us and the planet.

There is a trend of the handmade thing that is returning in opposition to the object in mass.

We believe that the future, or what we would like, is lasting, sustainable, respectful and honest.
