ECHO is a work by Boa Mistura, an action born from the interaction with the landscape and the experience of inhabiting it. The work is the result of an artistic residency undertaken by the group in October 2023 in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, in conjunction with the Regionale 2025 Bergisches RheinLand festival.

The intervention took place on the structure of the Agger reservoir dam, which collects the waters of the Agger, Genkel, and Rengse rivers. This civil engineering structure is 225 meters long and 45 meters high, of which only 10 meters are visible from the reservoir side, appearing to emerge from the water.

The reservoir dramatically transforms the landscape, its tranquil waters creating an immense mirror.

Conceptually, the piece is built upon reflection. An echo, understood as the return of a sound wave after striking a distant surface, can only exist if there is something to reflect it. In the words of Boa Mistura, "the proposal translates this idea to the visual plane: the dam's retaining wall becomes the support for a work that paints the water and is completed by taking advantage of its reflective properties."

The intervention requires constant balance. The line of symmetry must remain stable for the message to be revealed, creating an imaginary line that concentrates the poetic tension of the work. "The installation reacts to fluctuations in the reservoir's water level: it disappears when the water rises and is interrupted when it falls." “It’s a living, ever-changing piece, visible or unintelligible depending on the intensity of the rain; a witness to the times we live in, a live visualization of our relationship with the environment,” Boa Mistura explains.

As a result of this approach, Boa Mistura created ECHO with a dual perception, as both image and question. “It reflects to us the impact of our actions and invites us to consider the echo we produce in the world we inhabit. The landscape we take for granted in our daily routine reappears under a renewed gaze. The work proposes re-establishing a connection: to approach again, with humility, a territory that is not just our surroundings, but our home.”

Boa Mistura. The work of Boa Mistura is all about the love of graffiti, colour and life. This group founded by 5 Spanish artists is, as the name says, a good mixture. Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick have developed their work in different fields, applying both a diversity of styles and the different views of each member. Boa Mistura represents a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. From graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration, Boa Mistrua want to give the world its colour back. 5 heads, 10 hands, just one heart.

Boa Mistura is a multidisciplinary group whose roots are in graffiti, currently directed by Javier Serrano, Pablo Ferreiro and Pablo Purón. The group works in various fields: from the latest trends in graffiti and street murals, to illustration, graphic design, studio painting and collaborations with interior designers and architects.

They have taken part in exhibitions in art galleries such as the Reina Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida in Madrid, and the DA2 Museum in Salamanca. They have collaborated with foundations such as ONCE (Spanish national organisation for the blind), Oxfam and Antonio Gala, and given lectures at universities such as Madrid, Seville and Alcalá de Henares.

Boa Mistura has completed projects for brands such as Google, Microsoft, Sony Music and Adidas and in 2010 a Latin Grammy nomination for best cover design. The term “Boa Mistura”, from the Portuguese for “good mixture”, refers to the diversity of style and perspectives of each member. Love for graffiti, colour and life. Distinct visions which complement each other, influence each other, and always combine to create something even better.
