Architecture studio Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter is in charge of the project to develop a new extension of the SMK museum in a former warehouse, Doverodde Købmandsgård, the former silo and the scenic landscape that surrounds these historic buildings located in the commune of Thisted in Denmark.

The new extension is conceived as a place to elevate knowledge and experiences related to art and, therefore, its new location will enhance the symbiotic relationship between culture and nature. Therefore, the architects aim to develop a new and contemporary museum that meets the necessary requirements of today's society.
The New extension of the Statens Art Museum designed by the architectural firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter seeks to transform the former warehouse, Doverodde Købmandsgård, the former silo and the surrounding scenic landscape.

The most specific museum use will be in the old warehouse and silo. The architects propose a similar structural approach in the transformation of these two: a new museum within the existing walls, where a stable indoor climate, sensitive and protective facilities and low energy consumption will be established.

The café and restaurant will be located in the former Købmandsgården. The administration building, a new construction building, will be located in the pediment, near the museum and the new entrance.

The Nordea Foundation has awarded DKK 53.4 million to The Nature Village, these funds go towards construction and support activities during the first five years of operation.

The project at Doverodde Købmandsgård, in Thisted, will serve to manage the town's purpose-built features and outdoor activities, providing a place for education. It will serve as a platform for the area's many nature and outdoor associations, as well as nature, culture and outdoor guides, allowing them to create communities in the beautiful surroundings of Thy.

“Doverodde is a truly special place and with Nature Village we have a unique meeting place where people can come together to enjoy outdoor activities, nature, culture and environmental education. Here, associations, locals and visitors from all over the world "The country will be able to be part of various communities in beautiful and nature-rich environments. We believe this contributes to creating fuller lives. At the Nordea Foundation, we are proud to be part of turning these great ambitions into reality."
Christine Paludan-Müller, head of grants at the Nordea Foundation.

Fantastic news
Plans for the new Nature Village have been brewing for quite some time and in Thy, Mayor Niels Jørgen Pedersen called the recent news “absolutely fantastic”. He has been part of the team since the beginning, which has been going on for 7 years.

«I am very happy for Thy. The project builds a bridge from the land to the fjord and nature, with the aim of bringing nature into the daily lives of more people in Thy. Nature Village will improve the quality of activities and increase awareness. 'It's a new springboard in Thy'"
Mayor Niels Jørgen Pedersen

Specifically, The Nature Village is an establishment that has several facilities including a nature workshop, a kayak hotel, campfire cabins, an association house and equipment rooms. All located near the new SMK extension in Thy. The former warehouse from 1854 has been part of the expansion of the SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark, since 2018.

Cold Hawaii Inland has also contributed funds to the Nature Village project. The A.P. Foundation Møller has supported the new expansion of SMK Thy Project. Additionally, the Færch and Crown Prince Frederik Foundation and the Crown Princess Mary Foundation have provided funds for the establishment of SMK Thy.

Nature Village is expected to be completed by SMK Thy's grand opening in June 2025.
