Oku restaurant, sushi eatery, designed by Michan Architecture teamed Escala Arquitectos, is located in theupscale residential neighbourhood of Jardines del Pedregal, across from a famed church known as Parroquia de la Santa Cruz del Pedregal, in southern Mexico City.
With a simple and effective interior organization, the project takes advantage of the depth and height of the ceilings. Kitchen and services are situated in the back area, leaving the rest of the open space for dining and bar.

The Japanese restaurant has a rectangular in plan, Michan Architecture with Escala Arquitectos, designed the eatery with two levels, aimed to elongate the space's proportions and take advantage of its height.
The lower level encompasses a sushi bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and a back-of-house zone. Upstairs the curved booths are suspended over the dining room, with additional seating, where a series of "floating tables" are arrayed along a corridor.

Located in front of the iconic Parroquia de la Santa Cruz del Pedregal by designed by Antonio Attolini Lack on the corner between Boulevard de la Luz and Av. de las Fuentes at Jardines del Pedregal, OKU opened its second restaurant in Mexico City.
The interior layout takes advantage of the hight and elongates proportions of the space. Kitchen and services are situated in the back area, leaving the rest of the open space for dining and bar.
The bar and sushi bar works as the storefront of the long space. On its upper part, a mezzanine is created with tables and a corridor at the back. This mezzanine generates individual tables that are hanged from the the existing structure, proposing a unique dinning experience. the structure is composed of light steel members that are welded into the existing steel structure of the building.
Cylindrical lighting elements are hanged form the ceiling, merging the electric cables with the structural elements of the mezzanine.
On the upper dining area the drop ceiling is interrupted, leaving exposed the steel structure to have more height, generating a sensation of cutting and pasting the ceiling into the tables.
The cladding material are a combination of pine wood, gfrc concrete panels and pigmented stucco, producing a light and open atmosphere that plays with polished and raw finishes.

Michan Architecture is a studio based in Mexico City founded in 2010. The practice operates as a laboratory of architecture, exploring new possibilities within the discipline. They see architecture as a flirtation towards the built environment; a question towards the norm, a speculation of what the future can be.
The studio has been awarded by the Architectural League of New York with The League Prize for Young Architects + Designers 2020. In 2019 they are recipients of Design Vanguard award from Architectural Record Magazine, which honors 10 emerging practices from around the world. "That are demonstrating inventive approaches to shaping the built environment." DL1310 Apartment Building designed in collaboration with Young & Ayata received the 2019 Progressive Architecture Award from Architect Magazine. AL apartment received the American Architecture Prize in residential architecture 2017. In 2015 Z53 Social Housing won an Architizer Award, for Low cost housing. The work of the studio has been widely published and exhibit.
The practice is led by Isaac Michan Daniel. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Universidad Iberoamericana with studies at RMIT and a Master of Science in Architecture from Pratt Institute.He has taught at Universidad Anahuac, Universidad Iberoamericana and the AA Visiting School in Mexico City.
They pursue architecture as a material practice, hybridizing local craft with digital and analogue thinking. The work is a reaction to existing conditions, it strives to find a fine balance for the familiar, yet at precise completely weird. For us this midpoint is where the work is able to speak with the past without copying the recipes, while looking forward for new ways to misbehave mater and tectonics.
