ULTEAM is the project name designed by Paris-based architecture firm, Arte Charpentier Architects. It is a complex located on Rue Washington, near the Champs-Elysees in Paris, France.
The project consisted of the renovation, rehabilitation, demolition-reconstruction and elevation of an existing real estate complex, composed of five buildings from different eras, linked together and articulated around a courtyard and a garden.
These buildings include a Hotel Particulier (Private Mansion) built in 1820, with its historic salons and its 'French style' garden (listed as an “Espace Vert Protégé”), a Haussmannian building and a building from the 1950s.

Arte Charpentier Architects has carried out a complex restructuring operation, hybridizing history, heritage and contemporary architecture into a new 6,189 m² tertiary complex, called ULTEAM. In place of the 1950s building, located at 20 Rue de Washington, a new building was constructed (metal frame structure).
The façades of the new building and extensions are composed of a vertical brass-coloured mesh extending along the façade on the street, on the main courtyard, and around the garden. The façade rhythm and its mesh were designed to weave the link between the different spaces and temporalities.
An interplay of volumes and façades establishes a dialogue between the different eras. On the other side of the main courtyard and around the garden, two wings of the new building have been built in tiers, complemented on each floor by planted terraces in the continuity of the office spaces.
And above the private mansion, two levels have been built, including the 5th floor which houses Le Nuage, a space with a full-height attic window which benefits from a panoramic terrace.
There is a 156-seat auditorium in the basement, with an adjoining reception hall. All of these spaces are integrated into a public access building (ERP) including a section of private offices.

ULTEAM is a rehabilitation project for a group of offices, that includes a Haussmannian building and a structure from the 1950s. The Hotel Particulier (Private mansion) with its main courtyard and traditional french garden, dating from 1820, is at the heart of the project. Close to the Champs-Elysees, the rehabilitation brings history and contemporary architecture together.
With a contemporary aspect, the facades of the new buildings are composed of large glass panels surrounding and highlighting the renovated existing structures. A vertical mesh unfolds along the façade on the street, on the main courtyard, and around the garden. Expressing the building’s essence, the mesh weaves the link between the different spaces and temporalities. The all-around glazing and the particularly open façade rhythm promote natural lighting on all workstations.
Above the Hotel Particulier, two levels were created, including the 5th floor, the Nuage (the cloud), a space in the attic glazed to all heights, bathed in light, and surrounded by terraces that overlook the mansion and the garden; the space between sky and earth is quite singular.
The work on the interior spaces combines a careful restoration of the historic parts, such as the splendid living rooms of the Hotel Particulier with very contemporary spaces. The lobby is an example of this approach, combining elements of history and the clean implementation of noble materials such as marble and brass.
This renovation offers a wide variety of spaces: a gallery, foyer, multipurpose room, classified rooms, and office trays, all treated with the constant desire to offer bright, generous, and modular spaces.

Like the rest of the project, the ULTEAM landscaped spaces, the main courtyard, the historic garden, and the many garden terraces, offer an elegant contemporary aspect perfectly integrated into a preserved historical context.
The paved courtyard of honour, the first outdoor space encountered by the visitor, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the Hotel Particulier courtyard. With the creation of flowerbeds of plants and a fountain to refresh it, it becomes a haven of peace that offers, on sunny days, alternative workspaces outside.
The garden, a listed green space of 500 m² facing south, is framed by the «garden front» of the hotel particulier and its two new contemporary wings. The aim is to recreate a traditional French garden, focused on the historical façade, but the lack of historically documented information on the garden allows a free interpretation of it. It is not a restoration but rather a creation where the classical motifs take on a modern materiality: symmetry, fountains, flowering beds, a central lawn, a frame of low-cut hedges, and a pergola for old roses.
Accessible or not, all the roofs are planted with large vegetal carpets. The accessible terraces, true places of life, are spread on both sides of the garden and offer large spaces to exchange, work outdoors, or have lunch.
Finally, the terrace of the «Nuage» (Cloud), at the top of the building, offers an exceptional panoramic view of all of Paris near the Champs Elysees.

Arte Charpentier is an architecture firm based in Paris, Lyon and Shanghai.
Pierre Clément. Associate Architect & Urbanist, Chairman. He is Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. Architect, urban planner, author and collaborator of numerous books, and professor at the Paris Belleville School of Architecture.
Abbès Tahir graduated with honours from the Paris Villemin school of architecture in 1991 with a request for publication on his theme of verticality in urban centres. He completed his training, by developing his expertise with a number of large construction groups. His passion for metal and glass architecture led him to participate in international consultations. He joined Arte Charpentier in 1991. Since joining the firm, he has conveyed his professional values: architecture to serve mankind, combining technical experimentation and the contextual environment. He has actively participated in large-scale projects for public facilities, for example by designing the Saint-Lazare station (Meteor) of metro line 14. He also designed the Saint-Lazare "lens" used to access the station on Court de Rome, in Paris. His design won the Eurotunnel passenger terminal competition at Coquelles. He managed the territorial coherency master plan for the Bay of Algiers project in Algeria. He was responsible for the design and construction of the El-Ali complex in Setif. In Touba, Senegal, he headed the design team for the Serigne Fallou estate (population of 25,000 over 300ha). He designed street furniture for Century Avenue, in Shanghai, China. In May 2010, he became Deputy CEO and manages the firm development on national and international levels.
Andrew Hobson trained at the Architectural Association in London and has an international record of achievement on a wide range of complex architectural projects, notably the Musée d’Orsay and the Arsenal Pavilion. Andrew joined Arte Charpentier in 1987 and has participated in a number of international and national tender applications. He is responsible for a number of successful projects, including the Shanghai Grand Theatre (Gold Medal of Architecture), the Meridian hotel in Noumea, and Central Square in Pudong. Appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2010 and Project Director, he is one of the agency's leading design architects. Andrew is responsible for architectural respect, quality of concept, conformity to the programme, as well as resource management, cost control, and the objectives of the firm’s most prestigious projects. He is also the driving force behind the agency’s international development, represented by the creation of an agency branch in Shanghai and frequent collaborative projects with renowned international agencies in France and abroad (Sir Norman Foster, Faulkner Browns, HOK, etc.).
Jérôme Le Gall trained at the architecture schools of both Paris La Seine and Columbia University in New York. During his first years of experience, he acquired great expertise in his field. He designs and oversees projects for campuses, head offices for large companies, and the rehabilitation of buildings for industrial heritage sites. In May 2010, he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer. He first joined Arte Charpentier in 1987, participating in a number of successful tenders, including that of the "Dome" in Roissy – a street covered with a canopy, the first of its kind in France – and the Renault site in Boulogne. In 1996, he became a Partner in the firm. From design to delivery, he has supervised complex tertiary projects in historic urban sites for EDF Montpellier (head office of the Languedoc Roussillon Energy Unit). He has completed detailed studies for complex office projects in Montrouge, La Défense in the Triangle de l'Arche district, and in Vélizy. He has specific expertise in the design and construction of campuses of various sizes (Dassault-Systèmes, Véolia Environnement, the Oxygène tower, CDC Ixis head office, Cégédim head office, the Palatin I, II and III buildings, Praetorium, Portes de France, MP3, etc.). As head of the agency's "housing" team, he has designed projects in Paris for RIVP, a neighbourhood of 800 homes in Cavaillon, an apartment building in Lyon in the Buire commercial district and several buildings in Asnières and Eiffage for hotels and student residences.
