The urban artist SpY installed a 15m diameter black sphere located in the central oculus of the Logroño intermodal station, on the occasion of the seventh edition of the concentric urban festival held in the city of La Rioja.

SpY is compared to international urban artists such as Keith Haring, Obey or Banksy, his actions have been presented in different corners of the world, ranging from France, Germany, Poland, Mexico, the United States to Japan. One of his most striking interventions was in Madrid on the occasion of the celebration of the fourth centenary of the Plaza Mayor in an immense garden in a circle that intelligently played with the games of Renaissance geometries proposed by Juan de Herrera for the square.
SpY proposed a huge sphere covering the central oculus of the Logroño intermodal station, with references to the concept of monitoring, of seeing and the implicit derivatives that it generates in an era of tele-surveillance, Spay covers the opening of the light, occupying it with a large sphere that protrudes above and below the deck and ceiling of the station. When covering it and placing this black ball that also recalls the typical security cameras, it provokes in the viewer reflections on our contemporaneity, seeing and being watched.

“Art for me is a means to express and communicate my ideas. The city is my artistic support, it offers me great possibilities to carry out my works. What really matters to me is that people can find them, enjoy them and reflect”.

Project description by SpY

In “Blackout”, SpY proposes the installation of a black sphere with a diameter of 15meter to be located in the central oculus of the Logroño intermodal station for “Concéntrico 07” Logroño’s International Festival of Architecture and Design.

The oculus in their architectural origin had the funtion of windows or as a passage of light. Etymologically, the word derives from the Latin expression “ochulos” which literally translates as “eye”. In the Neolithic period it was interpreted as a symbol of the gods’ constant vigilance and attention to the actions of human beings.

With this intervention, SpY proposes a reflection through the historical symbolism of the oculus as a window of the gods’ omnipresent observation. It creates a parallel at a time when the digital has gained full presence in our lives through technological windows, establishing itself by way of surveillance, algorithmic observation and a new predictive cybernetic order. A state of digital control that parameterizes our existence and which is gradually changing how we humans relate.

With the installation of this large black sphere, SpY seeks to block the vision and entry of light by occupying the entire oculus perimeter. The volume of the sphere surpasses both sides of the domed ceiling, being observable from different viewpoints of the station and the city.

SpY is an urban artist whose first endeavors date back to the mid-eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to explore other forms of artistic communication in the street. His work involves the appropiation urban elements through transformation or replication, commentary on urban reality, and the interference in its communicative codes.

The bulk of his production stems from the observation of the city and an appreciation of its components, not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. His ludic spirit, careful attention to the context of each piece, and a not invasive, constructive attitude, unmistakably characterize his interventions.

SpY's pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience.
