The Spanish architecture studio DANA Arquitectos has designed the “Casa Ópera”, a single-family home located in a residential neighborhood of Zaragoza, an inland city in the northeast of Spain.

The main protagonist of the home is concrete, which functions as a structure, enclosure, and finish, and differentiates the walls from the roof depending on the type of formwork used.
The house designed by DANA Arquitectos consists of a roof that opens towards the garden and rests on the perimeter walls. To differentiate both elements built in concrete, the perimeter walls had a fluted formwork, while the roof had a phenolic formwork.

This idea allows all the rooms of the house to be open to the garden spaces that surround the home. Additionally, on the lower floor, the basement has three spaces that are illuminated through a more intimate patio.

Project description by DANA Arquitectos

The “Casa Ópera” is a single-family house located in a residential neighborhood of Zaragoza. In this home, the protagonist is concrete, which serves as its structure, enclosure and finish. It is a unique structure made up of a roof that opens towards the main garden and is supported by the end walls that make up the house. To convey this idea, the distinction between perimeter walls and roof has been emphasized using a fluted formwork for the former and a phenolic one for the upper crust. In this way, the opening of all rooms towards the garden spaces is allowed. In addition, the house has a lower floor with 3 rooms which are illuminated through a more intimate patio with vegetation.

DANA Arquitectos is an architecture and interior design studio located in Zaragoza, made up of three architect partners; Álvaro Bermudo, Ignacio Calvo and Ainhoa Iglesias. Graduates from the School of Engineering and Architecture of Zaragoza, they have collaborated with various prestigious studios in the city on projects in different fields, especially in residential areas.

They have award-winning works published nationally and internationally, and have participated in competitions of various architectural typologies, although most of their works are linked to the concept of living in a home, whether single-family or collective.

From the beginning they seek to transfer the values that define the studio to their projects: BRIGHTNESS - HARMONY - FINESSE. Each project is unique, as well as each client, so we work in a personalized way to create spaces designed to suit each user.
