Description of project by iiode
The Lausanne-based digital research studio iiode have completed the design and art direction of this year’s Design Switzerland’s Living Spaces exhibition at Milan Design Week. Using light and texture as a medium, the exhibition is a multi-sensory experience aimed to evoke feelings of empathy and well-being.
The showcase features a giant inflatable luminaire suspended in the ceiling of the centenary building, and honeycomb cardboard-constructed exhibition displays and seating — all entirely recyclable and to be given another life after the exhibition closes.
The design of Living Spaces is intended as a temporary lounge where the public is invited to slow down, providing a rare opportunity to pause in the bustling Brera Design District.
Showcasing the work of 9 emerging Swiss practices tackling themes of inclusivity, fairness, sustainability, and equitability, the space is organized into a series of intimate seating areas where visitors are invited to relax and engage with the pieces on show. The materials used to construct the exhibition, combined with the pieces on show, question the ideas of time and presence and together present a space for living where new conversations can emerge.
Living Spaces is part of Design Switzerland and is presented by the Swiss Arts Council and Pro Helvetia.
