The content of the Spanish 2016 Pavilion is planned as a response to the call made by its curator
Alejandro Aravena, under the name of
"Reporting from the Front". The aim of the motto is to invite each country to show how their architectures have reacted in the context of the recent years, tested by the economic crisis. Under the already known title of UNFINISHED, the projects selected by the curators
Iñaqui Carnicero and Carlos Quintans, are intended as a sample of the different answers of the Spanish architects to the economic and construction crisis Spain undergoes. These responses look for design strategies capable of transforming past conditions into contemporary actions by relying on virtues or creative speculations.
Regarding the architectural planning, the exhibition has been divided into four sections that develop the pavilion theme, as well as constitute the graphic and therefore theoretical content of the Spanish pavilion.- 7 photographic series, 55 photographic works, 12 submissions selected by open competition and 10 interviews. The curators expect that each part, as every project, generates synergies with each other, and at the same time the entire exhibition as a whole covers the central space, which will accommodate different activities such as seminars, presentations and projections.
It comes as a surprise that the exhibition pavilion ends with a somewhat dystopian closure, 10 interviews, which only count with the presence of United States leading figures (well, and architect
Sou Fujimoto too), who give their opinion on the Spanish architecture or on concepts related to the UNFINISHED theme. These 10 interviews have been solely conducted in the academic context the eastern United States.
The central space, with the election of 7 photographic series, houses the collective imagination constructed by the curators, a result of the production achieved by Spanish construction companies before, during and after the years of the current crisis. The artwork, which in many cases has already been widely disseminated by its graphic and reflective impact, dares the visitor to reflect on the outcome of this excited process - one of the most important speculative and constructive periods in the recent Spanish history -, linking the situation of the construction field with the financial crisis.
Although given the declarations, there is no intention of making any reflection on what led to this situation, what were the triggers of a singularity that has so deeply characterized the Spanish scene in recent years. It would be a good decision to reflect on the subject in order to try not to fall again on the same mistakes, which have been being systematically and regularly repeated and have produced a huge damage to the Spanish architecture panorama. It is good to show the plumage of the positive things born in this period, but without burying our heads in the sand as an ostrich.
7 PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES
The lateral rooms will be used to expose the 55 selected works of the total of 550 proposals received. According to the curators "In projects the scale or location do not interest, but the strategies that architects put into play in response to the built environment as explained above. Far from being a style, the exhibition confirms that these processes and methods have led to new architectures that have been able to adapt to new economic, social and environmental requirements." These projects are categorized into the following categories.
CONSOLIDATE, REAPROPRIATION, INFILL, ADAPTABLE, REASSIGNMENTS, NAKED, GUIDES, PERCHING, PAVEMENTS.
