In the city of Cartagena, known for its heyday during the Roman Empire, this project by Amann-Cánovas-Maruri is located, baptized as ‘Cielo de esparto’. It is a material linked to the history of the city and navigation.

The project has been projected in the El Molinete Archaeological Park, belonging to the University of Murcia. It is located in a place with a great patrimonial wealth, which includes an archaeological record from the 3rd century BC. to the XX, being a great laboratory for the reconstruction of the archaeological history of the city.
This Amann-Cánovas-Maruri pavilion can be seen in that its structure presents a clear division through two pieces, a vortex in the circulation of visitors and a square built with wood and esparto grass.

At the same time, it can be considered a Mediterranean project, in which there is an interplay between the light and shaded areas, the damp breeze, and an ambiguous position concerning the building.

Description of project by Amann-Cánovas-Maruri

Work in architecture does not understand sizes. The opportunity to build a small plaza associated with a service building in the Molinete Archaeological Park is a unique opportunity to investigate the materials that have been historically manipulated in Cartagena. Esparto, linked to the fields of Cartago-Spartaria and navigation, becomes one of the protagonists of the performance. Also steel and wood that at different times speak of shipbuilding in the shipyards of Cartagena. In this sense it is an evocative project.

But it is also a Mediterranean project that values shady surfaces, water-dampened breezes and the pleasure of placing ourselves in an ambiguous position with respect to the building, neither inside nor outside but between the limits.

The project is structured with two pieces, the first is a vortex in the circulation of visitors to the Archaeological Park, it contains an exit, a shop and a resting place, but it also solves the circulation of people with motor difficulties, it is a constructed piece in 10mm sheet steel and wood and is complemented by a small pool that cools and works with sound.

The second piece is a wooden and esparto square that shades the sun and the harsh light of the Mediterranean. It is therefore a resting place in the shade. A stronghold to rest and refresh after a few hours visiting the archaeological site.

This performance is a space, finally, that causes relief.
