Richard Neutra designed the JM Roberts Residence in 1955, now this house is up for sale.
An idyllic setting just 22 miles from Downtown Los Angeles, Neutra’s inspired design now defines the ideal California lifestyle.

The J.M. Roberts Residence, in the mid-fifties, 1955, the lifestyles afforded by Richard Neutra’s design aesthetic, were not readily accepted in the Eastern San Gabriel Valley. As Barbara Lamprecht describes in her monograph "Neutra: The Complete Works", “[The Roberts Residence] is a testament to Neutra and his well-tempered designers and office staff that this project got built.” Apparently, the Roberts family engaged the architect without fully investigating his work and directed him to design a ranch house. Although surprised by the initial designs, Neutra managed to convince the family that a modified design could suit their needs.

Neutra's modular grid, spider leg detailing, & asymmetric compositions combine to create a harmony of balance, transparency, & lightness. Similar in richness to that of his Bel Air & Beverly Hills projects from the same period, his signature Texas Shellstone entrance facade, fireplaces & built-in planters.

The renovation started in 2014, it underwent an extensive two-year-long rehabilitation process by Eric Lamers, has just been completed: updating systems, recreating missing elements, & rehabilitating original details, which took the West Covina property back to near-original state. The residence is sited in a parklike 3.5 acre setting among massive eucalyptus, pine and oak trees. It has lofty terrazzo and cork flooring and a fossilized stone double fireplace, original tile, including a master bedroom vanity, pool, and head on views of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The mid-century home is co-listed by Ilana Gafni of Crosby Doe Associates and Nate Cole of Unique California Properties
