The Tres Turons park is located between the Horta-Guinardó and Gràcia districts of Barcelona. It is one of the city’s green lungs, but is currently in a state of deterioration that puts its environmental value at risk. The Barcelona City Council convened a contest which several landscape teams entered.
The winning proposal for sector 1 was the project presented by scob, which orders and defines the structure of the paths and rings that surround the three hills, and proposes actions to improve and preserve the habitats and their associated biodiversity.

Project description by scob arquitectura y paisaje

The objective of the proposal is to establish a park conceived for today’s needs, made to last and with a low maintenance cost. A park of great ecological value and at the same time for citizens to enjoy. The strategic approach of the future park is based on considering the following aspects:

  • Improving the area’s ecological qualities.
  • Establishing the compatible uses and activities that are typical of a park, carried out by citizens (neighbourhood, citizenship and tourists, in this order of consideration).
Thus, the proposal actively considers the following strategic environmental guidelines:
  • To improve biodiversity of both species and ecosystems.
  • To promote ecological processes linked to this biodiversity.
  • To modulate and control disturbances that may affect biodiversity.
  • The application of sustainable drainage criteria to improve soil conditions and favour the water cycle.

Focusing on these 4 factors allows the ecosystems involved to gain stability (resistance and resilience wise). It also improves ecological functionality and increases ecosystem services for the population.

In order to make the ecological values of the park compatible with its use as an urban park, the project proposes the following main actions:

  • Rationalization of the paths’ structure and outline of its limits to improve accessibility while reducing disturbance to natural areas.
  • Treatment of the boundaries of the entire park, as an ecotone space blending park-urban fabric, by laying out a series of smaller parks for neighbourhood use connected to the park's internal path structure.
