The architecture studio Vaillo + Irigaray has developed a new proposal for the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Malaga, of whose contest they were winners in 2018 but due to legal reasons, the project was paralyzed for a time until in 2019 they raised a proposal, which they have modified again with the result that is now observed.

The proposal, despite changes in the volumes and the envelope, maintains the original idea of integrating naturally with Mediterranean architecture through a system of volumes developed around patios.
The Vaillo + Irigaray Arquitectos project continues to consist of three volumes that are organized around as many courtyards, which generate green and fresh spaces capable of providing friendly contexts to the interior spaces where all university activity takes place.

The project adapts to the topography, generating gentle exterior slopes that combine landscaped areas with paved areas, providing the exteriors with the ability of ideal spaces for the interpersonal relationships of users. In addition, the project bases its design on criteria of energy efficiency and savings, using both alternative energy and passive systems capable of optimizing the site's natural resources.

Description of project by Vaillo + Irigaray Arquitectos

Idea– Functionality.

The project proposal aims to follow the tradition, very persistent in our architecture, based on a system of volumes aggregation around patios.

This typology is frequent throughout the tradition of "didactic architecture" or "teaching architecture", where a usual typology of aggregation of new uses, was the juxtaposition of spaces around patios, united in turn by cloisters.

It is also usual in all Mediterranean architecture, especially in the South, where the climate favor open landscaped spaces, surrounded by architectures.

The proposal is designed as a grouping of volumes that include homogeneous functional programs organized in a central space, whose main use is the distribution and organization of the whole. It generates a big space of relationship that manages to combine the demands of the program while allowing a space of great environmental quality and comfortable.

Each volume, in turn, is organized around a patio, which reinforces the personality of each space generates a green, fresh and friendly space around which all activity revolves, becoming protected exterior spaces.

-Space of central relationship · lobby access: space of relationship, organizer of circulations.
-Teaching Unit Volume: Classrooms and laboratories.
-Departmental Area Volume: Professors Offices and Research Laboratories.
 - Assembly Hall, Coffee shop, Library and Deanery Volume.

Implementation - landscaping adaptation.

The disposal of the complex is adapted to the topography through gentle exterior slopes, landscaped and paved, allowing pleasant spaces of relationship. The 3 volumes are distributed on the site in a staggered way, adapted to the slope, and respecting the requirements of air servitude.

Sustainable Construction Techniques. The architectural design of the project is based on energy efficiency and energy saving standards. Essentially, the design is based on design, constructive and environmental techniques that rely on passive systems, as well as the use of alternative energies to optimize the natural resources of the place.

Vaillo + Irigaray Architects is an architecture firm founded in 1998 by Antonio Vaíllo and Juan Luis Irigaray, with Yago Vaíllo joining as a partner in 2020. It is located in Navarra, Spain.

The working method in the office is based on the concept of project strategy, which embraces the widest range of possible scales, from a simple bench to the whole city. It proposes a creative process that will develop founding concepts to be equally applied to management, procedures and design.

Vaillo + Irigaray Architects conceive design from a multifocal perspective, so they deal with matters from diverse points of view to contribute unifying solutions.

Their source of inspiration is the project itself: the client, function, program, and financial resources… are just raw materials for creativity. Consequently, every project has a unique personality, every project demands exclusive materials and details: every project requires an investigation process and precise development, according to specific needs. The office structure is organized into 6 areas:
