From June 6 to 28, a temporary installation by JR will be erected in the heart of the French capital, paying homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "The Pont Neuf Wrapped." Titled "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" (The Cave of the Pont Neuf), the work is part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the historic intervention and can be enjoyed by Parisians and visitors for a limited time, highlighting the role of Paris's oldest bridge.

As an open work of art offered to the city, "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" will be accessible 24/7 and can be viewed from a multitude of angles and perspectives: on foot or by bicycle, from the banks of the Seine, from the nearby high piers and bridges, or even from the top of the Eiffel Tower itself.

Establishing a dialogue between past and present, JR's vision for "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" takes as its reference point the quarries from which the bridge's stones were extracted, highlighting the origins of Paris's historical architecture. This intervention challenges the refined elegance of the City of Light by confronting it with the rawness of the wild.

Renowned for its rich history and picturesque views of the Seine, the Pont Neuf, which translates as "New Bridge," was completed in 1607 and was the first bridge in Paris not built with wood, constructed entirely of Lutetian limestone. It was the first crossing in the city to include paved sidewalks, facilitating pedestrian use and stimulating the dynamic Parisian street life.

“My vision for this project is rooted in both the past and present of this iconic bridge. I admire the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and I share their idea that the mission of art is to make us think, to question what is familiar to us. The debate that a public art project can provoke is of equal value to its realization. Art is a transformation, and a way of renewing the way we look at the world around us. Through the dream of La Caverne du Pont Neuf, this is what I hope to make possible in Paris.”

The interior of the artwork, a series of interactive experiences will expand the physical installation into a dynamic journey. To carry out this decision, JR enlisted the expertise of Snap Inc.’s AR Studio Paris, the center of excellence for the creation and research of augmented reality, putting innovation at the service of an ambitious artistic vision rooted in heritage.

“It will be a symbolic crossing, a step into the unknown, a journey within oneself. I designed the crossing of La Caverne as an experience where fullness and emptiness exist in balance.”

As an acoustic visual artist, Thomas Bangalter, former member of the duo Daft Punk, will participate in the project by imagining the sonic dimension of the intervention. Through a radical, conceptual approach, the musician proposes to sculpt a sonic material from electroacoustic elements, in keeping with the monolithic and mystical aspect of the work.

Advocating for minimal environmental impact, air will be the central component of the artwork. The intervention will be mounted on a double-walled inflatable support with permanent ventilation. Slightly pressurized, the air will fill 80 structural canvas arches and shape the exterior of "La Caverne du Pont Neuf." A printed fabric, acting as an enveloping membrane, will create a trompe-l'œil sculptural effect, resulting in a work with a rocky appearance.

For JR, "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" represents a culmination of an artistic cycle that began in 2020, during which the growing disconnection and isolation among citizens, particularly exacerbated by the pandemic and successive lockdowns, has been continually questioned. During its three-week run, the transformation of the iconic bridge into a cave invites the public to enjoy an unforgettable stay, fostering clarity, unity, and harmony among all.

JR (Jean René) was born in Paris, France, on February 22nd 1983, and currently works in Paris and New York. He exhibits freely in public sites in cities around the world. His work mixes Art and Act, talks about commitment, freedom, identity and limit. After finding a camera in the Paris metro in 2001, he travelled Europe to meet those who express themselves on walls and facades, and pasted their portraits in the streets, underground, and on the rooftops of Paris.

Between 2004 and 2006, he created the series “Portrait of a Generation”. In 2007, with Marco, he made Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal exhibition ever. JR posted huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face-to-face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities.

In 2008, he embarked on a long international trip for “Women Are Heroes”, in which he underlined the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflicts. That year, he also created “The Wrinkles of the City” in Cartagena, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Havana, Berlin and Istanbul. In 2010, his film “Women Are Heroes” was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. The same year, JR created “Unframed”, a project in which he uses images that are not his and reframes them in a new context, on a larger scale.

In 2011, he received the TED Prize, after which he created “Inside Out”. In a collaboration with New York City Ballet, he used the language of ballet to tell his story of the riots that happened in the French suburbs in 2005 and created “Les Bosquets”, a ballet and eponymous short film whose music was composed by Woodkid, Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer and which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival.

In 2014, he created an installation with 4,000 faces in and on the Pantheon in Paris. The concept of crowd will be used for a video installation at the CAC Malaga, and on the façade of the Assemblée Nationale and other monuments in Paris during the COP 21 summit at the end of 2015. The same year, he worked in the abandoned hospital of Ellis Island and directed the short movie ELLIS, starring Robert DeNiro. In 2016, he was invited by the Louvre and made the famous pyramid disappear through a surprising anamorphosis. He worked in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Olympics and created new gigantic sculptural installations using scaffolding, at the scale of the city, putting an emphasis on the beauty of the athletic movement.

His latest projects include a museum exhibition dedicated to children at Centre Pompidou, a permanent collaboration with the Brazilian artists Os Gemeos at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, in a space used to store stolen pianos during World War II, and a film with Agnès Varda, co-directing a movie with the Nouvelle Vague icon, traveling around France to meet people and discuss their visions. This Spring, JR will unveil a giant mural at Palais de Tokyo, in connection with a new project based in Clichy-Montfermeil. JR has been represented by Galerie Perrotin since 2011; he has had shows in Paris, Hong Kong, Miami and New York. In 2013, JR got his first museum retrospectives in Tokyo (Watari-Um) and CAC in Cincinnati, followed by Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden in 2014 and HOCA Foundation in Hong Kong in 2015.
