On Piamonte Street in Madrid, the architecture practice of Cristina Domínguez Lucas and Fernando Hernández - Gil Ruano has designed the first physical store for the cosmetics brand Laconicum. Conceived as an intimate and nurturing space that transcends the purely commercial, the project proposes a place dedicated to well-being that prioritizes the sensory experience. The design is thus conceived as a kind of refuge, where personal care takes on an almost symbolic dimension.

The intervention embraces body care as a cultural practice, linked to traditions that date back to the classical world. The delicate interior atmosphere, characterized by vertical and enveloping light, evokes ancient Roman baths, reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective that prioritizes serenity, introspection, and calm.

The space designed by Cristina Domínguez Lucas and Fernando Hernández - Gil Ruano is arranged through a series of wooden and metal niches, configured according to a precise rhythm reminiscent of the compositions of Donald Judd, the American artist associated with the minimalist movement. This repetition results in a serene order, where the displayed products are presented as almost ceremonial objects.

The careful selection of materials and the chosen color palette reinforce this transcendent experience: the green tones used, along with the wood, lime, and metal surfaces, create a warm and tactile atmosphere. The overhead lighting complements this quality, inviting the user to pause and inhabit the space with a more contemplative and mindful perspective.

Project description by Lucas y Hernández-Gil

Laconicum opens its first permanent physical store on Piamonte street: a small contemporary temple dedicated to body care and a celebration of the senses.

The project approaches care as a civilising gesture—beautifying, protecting, ritualising—and as a form of culture with roots in the classical world. The vertical light and dense atmosphere evoke a Roman thermal space, reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.

The metal and wooden niches, arranged in an almost liturgical rhythm, are reminiscent of Donald Judd: repetition as structure and order to create a serene tension in the space. Within them, a constellation of perfumes and cosmetics unfolds, acquiring an almost ritualistic value. A constellation of cosmetics and perfumes emerges within them, taking on an almost ritualistic meaning.

Pause and experience are encouraged by a tactile and luminous environment created by the overhead light, deep green tones, and material palette of wood, limewash paint, and metal.
