Thai architecture studio ASWA, led by Phuttipan Aswakool and Chotiros Techamongklapiwat, has been commissioned to design a new design hotel that has just opened its doors in the dense and heterogeneous area of Pathum Wan, at the vibrant epicentre of Siam Square, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The resulting volume is compact and prismatic, with no apparent formal fragmentation. It unfolds in height with an intensive occupation of the site, responding to the need to maximise land use on a small plot (c. 350 m²) and to the urban planning regulations regarding heights and setbacks in central Bangkok.

ASWA designs a building, conditioned by the geometry of the narrow and deep plot, featuring a light grey, exposed-concrete façade with a sober finish, reinforced by a metal mesh that creates a continuous skin acting as a visual filter for the rooms.

The image, contained only by the playful or expressive gesture of the metal mesh and the slightly curved façade, contrasts with the explosion of colour within, a sensorial expression reflected in a series of colour, texture, and furniture plays, giving the space a fresh, fluid, and open feel.

The resulting hotel is compact and economically rational, focused on climate comfort and programmatic efficiency. The decision to maintain a sober, almost abstract façade responds both to urban planning constraints and a desire to design a discreet, contemporary, and adaptable architecture.

Project description by ASWA

A new design hotel has recently opened its doors in the vibrant epicenter of Siam Square, Bangkok, a lively district known for its rich cultural tapestry and dynamic atmosphere. This innovative establishment features a striking facade that masterfully blends traditional Thai architectural motifs with a contemporary twist. The design prominently incorporates the Pun-Lom, an intricately carved element often seen in classic Thai homes, symbolizing the local heritage. The exterior is further embellished with gleaming stainless steel chain links. This modern nod represents the mosquito nets that Thai families historically used to cover their beds at night, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Stepping inside, guests are enveloped by a lively and invigorating interior that pays homage to the essence of Thailand through a carefully curated palette of vibrant colors inspired by the nation's rich cultural hues. This celebration of Thai aesthetics is particularly pronounced in the communal spaces, where joyful colors and ornate patterns create an uplifting and welcoming atmosphere that invites social interaction and exploration. The main lobby features a visually striking orange, pebble-shaped reception desk set against a lush green backdrop, establishing a warm and energetic tone for every arriving guest. Towering double-volume ceilings open up the space, allowing visitors to catch glimpses of the activities taking place in the yellow and black common area on the second floor. This versatile space is designed for working, dining, and leisure, further enhancing the communal spirit of the hotel.

At the rear of the lobby, a tranquil pool bar awaits, offering an oasis of calm where guests can unwind amidst verdant greenery and soothing water features. This serene setting is perfect for relaxation, providing a stark yet delightful contrast to the lively environments found throughout the hotel.

Each floor of the hotel continues the vivid theme, with thoughtfully designed lift halls that feature different colors indicating the level number. As guests approach their rooms, the vibrant hues gradually transition to more muted and soothing tones, creating an atmosphere of peace and restfulness. These tranquil retreats are designed to promote restorative sleep, yet even in these serene spaces, playful elements persist. For instance, the outer wall of the restroom boasts a striking array of colorful tiles, infusing a sense of fun and whimsy into the otherwise calm ambiance.

This harmonious fusion of vibrant energy and serene tranquility encapsulates the distinctive experience that guests can expect throughout their stay, promising both excitement and relaxation in equal measure.
