Located in the municipality of Vuisternens-devant-Romont, Switzerland, The Inverted Farm is a renovation project by Bard Yersin Architectes that transforms a 19th-century farmhouse into a mixed-use residential and permaculture space. The limited living space available in the original single-story dwelling presented the main challenge of the project.

To address this, the strategy implemented was to invert the original uses: the former agricultural volume now houses the new living quarters, while the south-facing house is completely gutted and converted into a permaculture greenhouse.

To optimize the barn's space, Bard Yersin Architectes incorporated a volume independent of the existing structure, achieving a subdivision suited to domestic needs. Around it, the intermediate areas serve as complementary spaces for cultivation and expansion.

The openings corresponding to the former haylofts house the main living areas, benefiting from open spaces and double-height volumes. In contrast, the sections aligned with the former stables and storerooms are subdivided by terracotta brick cores that contain the service areas.

For its construction, a structural timber grid integrates the new dwelling into the building's existing architectural logic. Wood and glass walls complete the intervention, while the lateral alcoves connect the different rooms and reinforce the perception of the exceptional dimensions of the whole.

Project description by Bard Yersin Architectes

The project transforms a 19th-century farmhouse. Deprived of its farming use and located outside the building zone, this large volume has become difficult to maintain given the limited habitable floor area permitted. In this context, the client’s mixed residential and permaculture programme represents an opportunity for a coherent reorganisation of the whole.

As the single-storey habitable space provided by the existing building is insufficient for the owner’s needs, the project reverses the original uses: the former agricultural volume accommodates the new home, while the south-facing dwelling is completely emptied and converted into a greenhouse dedicated to permaculture.

Since the barn space remains oversized for domestic requirements, the design strategy introduces a self-contained volume set back from the existing envelope. The resulting intermediate areas alternately offer planting zones and covered outdoor spaces.

To anchor the new dwelling in the building’s constructive logic, it is conceived as a timber structural grid aligned with the module of the existing roof structure and complemented by timber and glass walls.

The bays corresponding to former haylofts accommodate the main living areas, benefiting from double-height volumes and through-spaces, while the segments aligned with the former stables and storage areas are subdivided by terracotta brick cores housing the service spaces. Lateral enfilades connect the different rooms, reinforcing the perception of the building’s exceptional dimensions.

Bard Yersin Architectes is an architecture studio based in Romont, Switzerland, founded by David Bard and Thibault Yersin in 2019.

David Bard is a Swiss architect whose practice combines architecture, photography, and meticulous attention to existing buildings. After completing his training as a building draftsman, he studied at the Freiburg University of Engineering and Architecture (HEIA-FR), where he obtained his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2017 and his Master of Architecture degree in 2019.

He has been developing a photographic practice since 2020, exploring the observation and documentation of spaces. His photographs have been exhibited in Mézières, Berlin, the UK, Amsterdam, Rome, Munich, and Monthey. In 2021, he curated an exhibition at the Wallpaper Museum in Mézières. His occasional contributions to architectural education include invited lectures on reuse and on territory and landscape. Alternating between architecture and photography, Bard approaches the transformation of existing spaces with precision, restraint, and sensitivity.

Thibault Yersin is a Swiss architect whose work focuses on rural heritage and the cultural value of the built environment. Trained as a building draftsman, he studied at the Fribourg University of Engineering and Architecture (HEIA-FR), where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2017 and his Master of Architecture degree in 2019.

While studying, he worked at Bornard & Woeffray Architectes. He is a member of the Fribourg Cantonal Cultural Heritage Commission and the committee of Pro Fribourg, the cantonal branch of Swiss Heritage. His occasional contributions to architectural education include invited lectures on reuse, territory, and landscape. He has collaborated as an external expert on the Fribourg Cantonal Baukultur pilot studies. Together with David Bard, he has developed transformation projects that have received Swiss and international architectural awards and have been featured in national and international media.
