Architecture studio Barceló Balanzó Arquitectes was commissioned to design the new interdepartmental building on the UIB Campus in Palma de Mallorca, a Spanish city belonging to the Balearic archipelago.

The project is conditioned by the Urban Planning that governs the University Campus, so we find a permeable volume that enhances student meetings through fluid spaces that seek to promote mobility and the open mentality of the education that is taught in the building.
To flexibly adopt both the interior distribution of the spaces and the urban role within the teaching complex designed by Barceló Balanzó Arquitectes, the building groups classrooms, laboratories and offices forming a regular, compact and neutral prism. The program distributes the different uses by levels, allowing activities to be differentiated from greater to lesser flow of people as we gain height to improve comfort and achieve optimal working conditions in the center.

The project proposes a light and economical building, but at the same time that is compact, flexible and efficient. The presence of a continuous lattice illuminates the interior spaces and guarantees adequate working conditions, while a large central corridor illuminates an interior designed to articulate the campus routes and function as a place of relationship, thanks to the play of full and empty spaces.

Project description by Barceló Balanzó Arquitectes

The footprint and implementation of the building arise from the Urban Planning that governs the University Campus. The rotundity of the volume fragments at the corner, providing, as a porch, the necessary pedestrian permeability that this strategic enclave requires. From the existing paths, a natural access to the center is enabled, which is part of the usual campus route - walking, resting, understanding the environment from the access. A traversable exterior vestibule resolves the hinge between the two buildings.

The Building is conceived as an efficient container for teaching spaces; with classrooms, laboratories and departments. The compactness of the plant, the systematization of the envelope and energy efficiency are key elements in the environmental approach. With an efficient energy production system, connected to the campus Districlima, and rigorous control of energy losses based on the standardization and composition of the façade, the Building effectively meets energy standards.

A university center is planned with the highest comfort features (visual, hygrothermal and acoustic), in a privileged, bright environment, with large spaces that guarantee adequate working conditions.

In the distribution of the program, a stratification of uses by levels is established that allows activities to be segregated from highest to lowest flow of people as we gain height, guaranteeing the optimal functioning of the center.

The classroom, as a continuous lattice, illuminates the classrooms and departments from its façade. A wide central corridor, designed as a place of relationship, integrates in its route the voids that bathe the interior in light.
