On a plot of reduced dimensions on a densely built-up block located in a central pedestrian street in the city of Sabadell, the Vallribera Arquitectes architecture practice designed a family house between party walls that respects its surroundings while at the same time protecting itself from them and enhancing the conditions of the site.

The characteristics of the site condition the project, which is why a courtyard is generated in the middle of the plot that separates the dwelling from the rest of the constructions for greater privacy, which becomes the heart of the dwelling, as all the spaces of the dwelling turn towards this outdoor space that provides them with natural lighting and ventilation.
The design developed by Vallribera Arquitectes is divided into four functional modules stacked on two floors, communicating the different spaces of the dwelling by means of a set of stairs and walkways that operate as an intermediate space between the two volumes that form the dwelling. The functional program locates the public spaces of the dwelling on the ground floor, separated by the courtyard, and on the first floor the bedrooms and study, ending with a roof terrace at the top of the construction.

By means of a traditional structure of load-bearing walls and one-way slabs with prefabricated rectangular joists, as well as the double-leaf façade with insulation and a ventilated chamber on the inside, the building is left exposed on the outside and painted on the inside. Inside, the impact of the materials of the envelope, without cladding, is complemented by different coloured elements in the joinery and furniture.

Project description by Vallribera Arquitectes

A well-travelled couple who have lived in other cities in Europe decide to return to Sabadell. They have chosen the father’s hometown as the place to raise their two children. They want to live in the city center so they won’t need a car, where they can stroll or make a quick trip to the market. They prefer neighborhood life to a big yard in a residential development.

We tore down a building that could no longer be renovated on a pedestrian street in the city center. Unlike in the newer expansion neighborhoods, here the plots are wide but very shallow (specifically, 5.35 m x 16.50 m), and the block interiors are largely built up. The mostimportant decision we made for this project was to situate the courtyard in the middle of the plot instead of putting it at the back. This operation generates an extra façade for ventilation and light, while providing a more intimate space and privacy from the neighbors. All the rooms in the house, distributed between the two built volumes, open onto this outdoor space, which becomes the heart of the house.

We placed the staircase in the courtyard, which is designed as an intermediate space. It is a covered exterior space, protected by the walkways and a series of mobile polycarbonate enclosures that help to heat and cool the two built volumes. The functional program is divided into four boxes, two in each volume, stacked across two floors. On the ground floor, the kitchen-dining room is separated from the street by the hall with a parking area for bicycles and a guest bathroom. It connects to the living room through the courtyard. On the first floor, there is the children’s room and the study on one side and the couple’s room with the bathroom, on the other. The courtyard at the center, like another room but without a roof, is always present, open to the sky, the clouds and the sun. The second floor is ready for a possible expansion of the house in the future, but for now, the two large terraces can be used for sunbathing.

We implemented a simple bioclimatic strategy. The two parts of the house function independently as compact, well-insulated buildings. At the same time, their uses are segregated across the different levels. The result is four compact spaces that have a minimum demand for air conditioning. On summer evenings, the courtyard guarantees a constant breeze to cool the building, the rolling blinds keep out the sun, and the climbing plants help dissipate the heat. In winter, the gallery, which extends to the second floor to seek the sun, acts as a solar collector and distributes the preheated air throughout the house. For the days of the year when the temperature is most extreme, the temperature can be controlled by a minimum capacity heat pump.

We worked with a traditional structure of load-bearing walls and floor slabs running in a single direction, with prefabricated rectangular beams. The construction is of structural brick manufactured in the county of Segrià, with the façades made from cavity brickwork with insulation and an air gap for ventilation. Using this system means the brick can be exposed on the outside and painted on the inside. Plaster ceilings, continuous concrete flooring on the ground floor, and parquet flooring on the first floor define the interior design. The staircase and walkways are a lightweight construction made from metal profiles and pressure-treated pine planks. The raw presence of the materials, with no cladding, is complemented by elements of different colors such as the green windows, the pastel mint kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, and the furniture that combines the warmth of natural wood with touches of bright colors (yellow, red and orange).

From time to time, we all need a Little Prince to remind us that ‘the most important thing is invisible to the eyes’. Living abroad, the family came to understand something: they wanted a new home in harmony with their values. That is their definition of luxury, and this project has offered them that new home.

Vallribera Arquitectes is an architecture firm sit in Sabadell. The founding partner is Llorenç Vallribera Farriol. It was estableshed in 2012 and in 2019 Aleix Gil Noray joined as a partner. They focus on the design of both reforms and new works of isolated houses and between party walls. Its objective is to provide each project with beauty and comfort. The success of his trade is the use of energy efficiency, custom design, optimization and cost control as fundamental tools.

They were selected in the Transition category of IX edition of the 2016 Rosa Barba International Paisatge Award, they won the X NAN Architecture and Construction Awards 2016 in the residential construction category and the BUILD Architecture Awards 2018 by Best Residential Architecture Company - Barcelona Most Efficient & Customized Interior Design Company.

Llorenç Vallribera is an architect and founding partner at Vallribera Arquitectes. Handball, music and drawing are the hobbies that take his mind off architecture and design.

Llorenç earned his degree in architecture from the Vallès School of Architecture (ETSAV, 1995-2003). In 2000, he was awarded an Erasmus scholarship from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) to study at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT).

From 2000 to 2008 he was a collaborator with different architecture studios, including Espinet Ubach Arquitectes, ONL Arquitectura, and TAC Arquitectes. In 2006, he began developing his own designs, and in 2012 he founded Vallribera Arquitectes.

If he had to choose just one hobby, it would come down to music or handball. Years of training and playing the drums have taught him that learning takes hours of practice and dedication. But what would practice be without the excitement of a concert, and what would training be without the challenge of a game?

Llorenç is detail oriented and a perfectionist. When it comes to his work, he likes things to be resolved and well done. He knows that achieving success takes a mixture of audacity, humility, perseverance and talent. He believes that, in architecture, like when a concert goes well or when you win game, all the effort is worth it when it makes life better in the environments we build.

Aleix Gil is an architect and partner at Vallribera Arquitectes, he loves the mountains and climbing; he is an all-around mountaineer.

Aleix earned his degree in architecture from the Vallès School of Architecture (ETSAV, 2005-2012). In 2009 he was awarded an Erasmus scholarship from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) to study at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME).

In 2012, he began working at Vallribera Arquitectes, and through 2014 he also collaborated with MVA Arquitectura i Estructura. In 2015, he put all his efforts into becoming a Lead Designer at Vallribera Arquitectes. Four years later, in 2019, he became a partner at the firm.

Aleix’s first passion is clear: architecture. The second is also clear: the mountains. He likes climbing, downhill skiing, and mountaineering  – activities that have taken him many places, although if you ask him, no doubt he will tell you that his favorite place is Montserrat.

Aleix is a warm, friendly and easygoing person, who only speaks when it is truly necessary. His love for nature and his commitment in the face of a challenge show through in his work, his passions, and how he approaches life every day.
