The architecture studio Jotajotamás designed "Curtidores 32," a new mattress store that redefines a commercial space as a domestic experience, located on Ribera de Curtidores Street in Madrid.

The new commercial proposal is developed with the aim of generating an individual exploration, in which the visitor will freely and spontaneously explore the space among the paving stones and suspended elements, turning the experience into an intimate and personalized moment.

The "Curtidores 32" store, designed by Jotajotamás, is organized around a continuous base of yellow carpeting that defines the spaces, complemented by tracks with suspended curtains that organize circulation, and a wooden perimeter that frames the headboards and displays commercial information.

The project features a diagonal entrance that connects the street to the façade, composed of a large yellow molding and a sheet metal staircase. Inside, the flooring is made of large-format, neutral tiles.

Project description by Jotajotamás

The new mattress store designed by JOTAJOTA+ redefines a commercial space as a home-like experience. The project proposes a free-flowing route through different areas where each visitor can try out the products as if they were in their own home.

The project is structured around a wooden perimeter that organizes headboards and product information, while privacy is created through the interplay between different flooring and suspended elements. These latter elements, combined with sinuous tracks and large curtains, create intimate and defining spaces, modulating the visitor's perception and movement.

Three key features characterize the design: the entrance, the flooring, and the suspended elements. The façade, composed of a large yellow molding and a sheet metal staircase, presents a diagonal entrance that connects the street with the interior, becoming a powerful visual focal point.

The flooring combines large-format neutral tiles, creating a continuous base, with yellow rugs that define the different home-like areas. The tracks and suspended curtains filter the view, organize the flow of traffic, and offer moments of privacy for trying out the mattresses.

The layout is designed for individual exploration: visitors decide how to move, while the space envelops, surprises, and transforms the shopping experience into an intimate and personalized moment, where each area reveals the comfort and unique qualities of the mattresses.

Jotajotamás is an architecture studio founded by architects Jorge Gabaldón and Javier Onrubia in 2022, based in Madrid, Spain. To the studio, "+" represents a way of working, is an open process that incorporates diverse disciplines, technical profiles, and scales of work. The result of this collaboration is a collection of distinctive and rigorous projects, born from the union between JOTAJOTA and its collaborators.

After working in several national and international architecture studios, JJ+ was created as a project focused on the exploration and development of unique architectural projects. Their work is enriched by creative processes and collaboration with third parties, from a critical perspective on ways of inhabiting spaces and spatial relationships in architecture.

Jorge Gabaldón graduated in Architectural Studies from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, complementing his training with residencies at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Tongji University in Shanghai. During his university studies, he was a teaching assistant in the Design Department for two and a half years. After completing his Master's degree in Architecture in 2019, he worked in several prestigious architecture firms, both nationally and internationally. In collaboration with other studios, he participated in the project that won the 2021 COAM Award, Casa Apiladas; in the renovation of the façade of the Princesa Building, designed by Fernando Higueras; as well as in two first-place prizes in public housing competitions. In 2021, he founded his own practice, JOTAJOTA+.

Javier Onrubia graduated in Architecture from CEU San Pablo University in Madrid, receiving top honors for his final year project. He complemented his studies with a stay at Sapienza University of Rome. During his university years, he collaborated for two years as a teaching assistant in the Design Department. After graduating, he worked for several years in various architecture firms and in the hotel industry. She notably joined the construction department of the Vincci Hotels chain, where she coordinated the execution and budgets of construction projects related to the hotels' operational needs. In 2021, she founded her own practice, JOTAJOTA+.
