The Mile-Long Opera by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and David Lang
Diller Scofidio + Renfro together with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang present The Mile-Long Opera, for five consecutive nights, October 3-7, 2018: a biography of 7 o’clock – an ambitious, collective, free choral work that shares personal stories from hundreds of New Yorkers about life in this rapidly changing city.
The text of The Mile-Long Opera, written by acclaimed poets Anne Carson and Claudia Rankine, is inspired by real-life stories about what 7:00 pm, a time when people transition from day to night and from one activity to the next, means to residents throughout the city.

“After working on the design of the High Line for over a decade and witnessing the rapid transformation of the surrounding area, I thought a lot about the life cycle of the city—its decay and rebirth—full of opportunities and contradictions." explained Elizabeth Diller.

“You walk up the High Line and you can see a bit of everything. I wanted the music to work the same way: 1,000 singers each have their own solo stories to sing... You might hear them all together, in a haze, as you walk by. Or you might lean in and hear each story.” - Composer David Lang on "Mile Long Opera" (shown with Music Director Donald Nally).

The performances will take place from October 3-7, 2018. Admission is free, however advanced tickets are required and will be available at ...read more
