The architecture firm Lafuente Silva Arquitectos has received the first prize in the competition for the Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Bengolarra Complex, in the city of Zigoitia in the País Vasco, Spain.

It is a public sports facility, which was built in 1950. It houses a municipal swimming pool and a scarce area of public services. For this reason, the competition sought programmatic adaptation and integration with the environment.
The project carried out by Lafuente Silva Arquitectos focuses on creating a heterogeneous program to establish a dynamic connection between municipal services with a multipurpose room and a bar-restaurant, accessible both from within the complex and from outside.

They create a porch as an extension of the building in a way that favors the social relationship. The interior of the building is renovated, improving its vertical circulation to have better accessibility and operation.

All the materials used are natural and recycled. They create a space linked to nature, recovering the prominence of the park.

Description of project by Lafuente Silva Arquitectos

Wandering around for the meeting, walking accompanied, gathering in the rain, safely and accessible in a space as closely linked to nature as possible (recovering the prominence of the park).

A varied program to dynamize the urban complex, which connects the axis of municipal services with the multipurpose room and the bar-restaurant as urban doors.

A porch is presented as an extension of the building, which configures the public space, unifies the ground floor level and becomes the element of social cohesion to enhance the relationship of the children who play in the park with the older people who go and comes. A new communicating axis (east-west) that is punctually drilled to respect the existing vegetation.

The interior of the building and its vertical circulation are reformed, improving accessibility and operation.

Access to the building is filtered by vertical elements of the façade, arranged in front of the planting of trees as an echo of these, which at the same time serve as a supporting structure and solar protection.

Natural and recycled materials such as concrete, steel, wood and glass are the protagonists.

Between two worlds, vibrating between the street that does not want to obstruct the vision of the park and the park that wants to get closer and find its backdrop as a filter to the building.
